Cup/tray/pouch-filling machines: Ohlson
Packaging has launched two new products to
help meet the automated packaging needs of
its customers, unveiling a cup- and tray-filling
solution as well as a new high-speed rotary
pouch-filling machine. The Inline Cup and Tray
Systems are designed for liquid, powder, volumetric, hand, and specialty filling, accommodating up to six lanes of cups or trays ranging
from two to 12 inches in width, with up to 20
cycles per minute per line. The cup and tray
system also allows for modified atmosphere
packaging as well as automatic lid placing,
shrink banding, date coding, labeling, automatic case packing, and a case shrink system,
the manufacturer says.
The high-speed pouch-filling machine is an
enhanced version of the company’s existing
rotary pouch-filling machine, with an updated
design that allows it to fill up to 60 pre-made
pouches per minute.
Both of the new machines are designed to
integrate seamlessly with Ohlson Packaging’s
existing products, including multi-head and
linear scales, conveyors, and other packaging
automation equipment. (Ohlson Packaging,

Refrigeration-unit controller: Carrier
Transicold’s new Micro-Link 5 controller allows
shipping line personnel to monitor and access
container refrigeration-unit operations from a
smartphone or tablet. The Micro-Link 5 controller allows personnel to interface with refrigerated containers via Carrier Transicold’s new
DataLINE Connect app for mobile devices without any physical contact with the refrigeration
unit itself. That means operators standing dockside or on a ship deck can monitor temperature
readings, check alerts, review diagnostics, and
download data from nearby Carrier Transicold
refrigerated containers, even if the containers
are stacked high above. The DataLINE Connect
app provides information-rich, intuitive displays
so operators can quickly and easily see and
respond to relevant container information.
The manufacturer also offers an optional
“smart” backup battery for the Micro-Link 5
controller. This rechargeable smart battery has
the ability to prioritize operations based on
charge level. For instance, if the charge level is
low, it will maintain critical USDA sensor data
recording and disable nonessential activities.
The smart battery also indicates charge level
and remaining service life, helping users get
maximum use from a battery, rather than prematurely replacing it. (Carrier Transicold, www.

Small parcel sorter: Dutch
systems integrator VanRiet
has introduced the HC Smalls
Sorter, a new small-parcel
sorter that’s tailored to the
needs of the courier, express,
and parcel industry. Capable
of handling packages as
small as four inches long by
two inches wide by 0.2 inches high and as light as 0.1
pounds, the unit features a
narrow-profile infeed belt
that transfers small packages
smoothly to the sorting deck. The advanced sliding-shoe design works in tandem
with rounded slats to prevent thin products from becoming trapped underneath
shoes and causing jams.
The HC Smalls Sorter is also built with a fully closed deck, which prevents dirt
and cardboard pieces from getting stuck in the system. The closed deck contributes to low noise levels and safe working conditions for distribution staff as well.
The HC Smalls Sorter has a maximum speed of 2.0 meters per second ( 4. 47
miles per hour). Due to the new switching system, it is possible to place outfeeds
every 650 or 900 mm ( 25 to 35 inches) along the main conveyor line. With these
short outfeed pitches, less floor space is needed. The unit’s modular design allows
for easy customer-specific configuration of the standard components. In addition,
the sorting system can be extended and synchronized with other shoe sorters.
