WHEN THE SHOW IS CLOSED
all good things must come to an end, and ProMat 2013 is no exception. Every day at 5 p.m. ( 3 p.m. on Thursday), ProMat will close its doors for the
evening. What to do then? Here’s an arbitrary selection of spe-
cial events taking place in and around the ProMat show’s venue
in late January:
▪ The Chicago Blackhawks, the city’s National Hockey League
(NHL) affiliate, will hit the ice at the United Center against the
Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday, Jan. 20, and the Dallas Stars on
Tuesday, Jan. 22.
▪ The Chicago Bulls National Basketball Association (NBA)
team will take on the Los Angeles Lakers at the United Center
on Monday, Jan. 21, and long-time rivals the Detroit Pistons on
Wednesday, Jan. 23.
▪ Chicago's renowned improvisational theater troupe will
present an evening of unscripted comedy in “The Second City’s
Improv All-Stars” at the UP Comedy Club on Monday, Jan. 21.
▪ The smash-hit Broadway musical “The Book of Mormon,”
winner of nine Tony Awards, will be appearing at the Bank of
America Theatre. Every day except Monday.
▪ A special exhibit on jellyfish at the Shedd Aquarium will
showcase how these pulsing, translucent animals survive—and
thrive—in the world’s oceans without blood, bones, or brains.
▪ At the Museum of Science and Industry, you can hang out
with the Peanuts gang in the special exhibit “Charlie Brown and
the Great Exhibit” or see how lunar colonists might be able to
grow food on the moon at the “Life in Space?” temporary exhibit.
▪ A unique fashion exhibit at the Field Museum of Natural
History includes such novelties as a translucent raincoat made
of seal intestines, a vest of crocodile skin, and an evening gown
of rubber-coated thread.
▪ The Art Institute of Chicago will celebrate the opening of the
new Mary and Michael Jaharis Galleries of Greek, Roman, and
Byzantine Art with “Tradition Transformed,” a special presenta-
tion of late Roman and early Byzantine treasures from the
British Museum.
▪ At “Skating in the Sky at the John Hancock Observatory,” you
glide more than 1,000 feet in the air on a 900-square-foot syn-
thetic ice skating rink while enjoying views of the lakefront and
bustling Lake Shore Drive.
