NEWS FROM THE CONFERENCE AND TRADESHOW CIRCUIT roadtrip
go to the mountaintop
THESE DAYS, WE’RE ALL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO GET TO THE
promised land of economic recovery. The International Warehouse Logistics
Association is no exception. When it stages its 118th Annual Convention and Expo
next month, the group will try to provide the view from the mountaintop with an event
organized around the theme “Embracing Change and Claiming the Higher Ground.”
The convention’s two keynote speakers will sketch out roadmaps to a better future.
Joseph Sherren, president of Ethos Enterprises, will discuss ways to engage employees
in efforts to create a successful operation that is flexible, customer-focused, and proficient. Charlie Covert, vice president of UPS Customer Solutions, will talk about the
impact of fluctuating fuel costs and economic uncertainty on the third-party logistics
service industry.
The event also includes educational sessions on working with fourth-party logistics
providers, achieving Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) certification, and current legal and insurance issues.

shrink-wrap your way to greatness?
You can’t shrink your way to greatness, as business guru Tom Peters has pointed out. But there’s
a good chance you can “shrink wrap” your way there, says David Abney, chief operating officer
of UPS. During a special presentation at the Warehousing Education and Research Council’s
Annual Conference in Atlanta, Abney will describe how to “wrap” a protective strategic coating
around your supply webs and make them resilient to risk. This act of “shrink-wrapping against risk”
is essential to achieving success, he says.
Abney’s presentation is just one of many sessions at the conference that will focus on how to
survive difficult times. In total, the conference will offer more than 80 sessions, with speakers
from organizations like The Container Store, Kimberly-Clark, JohnsonDiversey, Deloitte, and the
U.S. Army. Attendees can also choose to tour one of six nearby distribution facilities. The
Warehouse Industry Resources Event will showcase the latest warehouse products and services.
Registration is now open for the conference, which runs from April 26–29. Early-bird discounts
are available to those who register before March 16. For more information, visit www.WERC.org.

during the Spanish-language track, which is scheduled for the first day of the conference, March 16.
The conference runs from March 16–18 in Houston and includes keynote presentations from business strategy analyst Thomas Davenport and Steven Melnyk of
