fresh delicacies of AsiaTown, there’s no shortage of traveler
temptations. If possible, take a trip to the West Side Market,
which is just seconds from downtown by train or by taxi over
the chiseled stone Hope Memorial Bridge. Open on
Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays (just remember—no “T” days and no Sundays), this nearly century-old
neoclassical indoor/outdoor market serves up fresh fruits and
vegetables, sausages, burritos, falafel, homemade pretzels,
cakes, noodles, and other mouthwatering menu items.
Sample as you explore the floor, stop for a quick bite in the
West Side Market Café, or walk to one of the many neighborhood dining establishments like Great Lakes Brewing Co.,
an eco-friendly brewing company with great beer and even
better stories. If you stop by the pub, be sure to ask either your
bartender or your guide on one of the free brewery tours to
point out the bar’s bullet hole, allegedly made by crime fighter Eliot Ness, for whom an amber lager beer is named.
Shop, look, and listen
Ahh, but it can’t all be about the food. Walk it off with a visit
to University Circle, one of the most concentrated square
miles of arts and culture in America. If you drive, avoid the
construction on Euclid Avenue (a main east/west thorough-
fare that’s currently undergoing a major makeover) by taking
Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard along the cultural gar-
dens. Once you’re parked, you can hoof it to all the major
attractions—like the spectacular butterfly-filled
“Glasshouse” conservatory at the Cleveland Botanical
Garden, the planetarium at the Cleveland Museum of
Natural History, the Western Reserve Historical
Society/Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum, or the elegant
Severance Hall, home to the Cleveland Orchestra.
