Shoe sorters: Hytrol Conveyor Co. has introduced new features for its 421 and 431
ProSort high-speed shoe sorters. The features include new shoe and slat designs and
maintenance features that increase throughput without increasing conveyor speed. The
design also allows for longer sortation length. For example, Hytrol has installed a 720-
foot-long sorter for one customer. The new slat design eliminates gaps between slats,
reducing chances of debris falling through the sorter. And the sorters now require less
maintenance and fewer spare parts than earlier models did, the company says.
The 400 series is designed for applications requiring high speeds and positive and
gentle sortation. (Hytrol Conveyor Co., www.hytrol.com)
Lift truck-mounted computer: Motorola’s
new VC70N0 lift truck-mounted mobile
computer marks a major upgrade from the
company’s VC5090 line of vehicle-mounted
computers.
The VC70N0 enables real-time data access
and collection in a wide range of environments—from the dock and warehouse to the
freezer. It can support applications for receiving, putaway, replenishment, picking, packing, and shipping. Users can easily add a variety of options to the VC70N0, including corded or cordless bar-code scanners, keyboards,
and a variety of voice capabilities. According
to Motorola, the VC70N0 helps improve
inventory visibility and reduces errors in warehouses, cold storage, yards, intermodal terminals, and seaports.
Designed to operate within the four walls
of the distribution center, the VC70N0 vehicle-mounted computer features the latest
operating systems, 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi connectivity, and a much smaller overall design.
The smaller size makes the computer easier to
mount and improves the visibility of the lift
truck operator. The unit is 40 percent lighter
than the previous VC5090 units and has an
overall size of 10. 4 inches.
The VC70N0 can be used in both traditional telnet terminal-based environments and
browser-based applications. (Motorola

Conveyor belts: Emerson, a St. Louis-based
technology and engineering firm, has introduced two new modular plastic belts that
offer nonskid conveyor surfaces. Designed for
heavy-duty material handling applications and
automotive assembly lines, the new belts have
load ratings of up to 7,800 pounds per foot.
The belts can be used in a conveyor retrofit
using existing rails. “It offers a nice, clean
retrofit,” says Jeff Himes, senior product manager for System Plast Power Transmission
Solutions, part of Emerson’s Industrial
Automation business.
The System Plast 2508 heavy-duty belt handles loads of up to 5,400 pounds per foot.
The System Plast 2630 extra-heavy-duty belt
handles loads of up to 7,800 pounds per foot.
Those loads are among the highest in the
industry. The 2508 heavy-duty belt is 0.87
inches thick and is available in widths of 11. 8
to 196.8 inches. The extra-heavy-duty 2630 is
1. 2 inches thick and available in widths of 3. 9
to 196.8 inches.
In addition to the heavy capacity, the belts
provide energy savings compared with chain
and live roller conveyor for heavy loads.
