Safety alarm for mezzanine gates: The new
EdgeAlert Open Gate
Alarm System from
Wildeck helps reduce accidents and OSHA violations
by issuing a warning when
elevated mezzanine platform gates are inadvertently left open.
When a gate is opened,
the EdgeAlert alarm produces a highly visible flashing light and a loud alarm.
The EdgeAlert alarm is easy to operate and can be installed
on new or existing swing gates, slide gates, tilt gates, or scissor
gates. It includes a 120-volt AC plug-in power supply and can
also be powered by four long-life alkaline “D” cell batteries,
which are not included with the device.
Amber-colored LED lights are located on the front and back of
the alarm enclosure. When a gate is being used for daily activities, workers may choose to silence the EdgeAlert alarm for 120
seconds by pressing the “snooze/acknowledge” button. Once
an open gate has been closed and secured, users can reset the
EdgeAlert alarm by pressing the “snooze/acknowledge” button
or simply opt for the automatic reset mode. (Wildeck Inc., www.

LCL import service: CaroTrans, a global nonvessel-operating
common carrier and ocean freight consolidator, has announced
a new all-water less-than-containerload import service from
Shanghai to Atlanta via the Port of Savannah in Georgia.
The transit time is 32 days, and freight is deconsolidated at
CaroTrans’ Atlanta container freight station (CFS). Expedited distribution services are available to Alabama, Georgia, North and
South Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee.
According to Caro Trans, the new Shanghai-to-Atlanta service
provides customers with an alternative to congested U.S. West
Coast gateways. Caro Trans’ global network includes import services from Japan, Korea, Europe, the U.K., India, Sri Lanka, the
Middle East, Oceania, South America, and South Africa to the
U.S. (Caro Trans, ctishipping.carotrans.com)
Volume measurement system: Vitronic’s VolumeChd system
captures volume measurements for cuboidal and irregularly
shaped objects.
The system is suitable for automatic invoicing and legally binding revenue recovery, loading optimization, and parcel/package
defects detection. It is capable of throughput speeds of up to
three meters per second (600 feet per minute) and can capture
the measurements and contours of items that measure up to
100 inches by 40 inches by 40 inches. Vitronic says the system
has a measurement accuracy of 0.2 inches by 0.2 inches by 0.2
inches. It can be installed as a standalone dimensioning system
or integrated into the Vipac camera-based identification system.

Heavy-load automated guided vehicle: Jervis B. Webb Co.
has created a multi-independent steer-drive design that allows
heavy-load automated guided vehicles (AGVs) to steer more
easily through a facility.
Heavy-load AGVs are those that are capable of automatically
picking up and moving materials that weigh up to 250,000
pounds. (Examples of materials with this mass include dies,
ingots, casks, oversized containers, fixtures, and pallets.) Webb
also provides a full range of guidance technology, including inertial guidance, laser guidance, and magnetic tape.
The AGVs are available with two to four axles. The four inde-
pendent all-electric steer drive option allows the vehicle to move
in a sideways direction, referred to as “crab lateral travel.”
The control system provides diagnostics that are easy to
understand, according to the company. The system writes infor-
mation to an intuitive data recorder, which allows maintenance
technicians to quickly evaluate the performance and operation of
AGVs and make rapid adjustments. Webb offers classes on how
to work with the data either at its own facilities or at customers’
locations. (Jervis B. Webb Co., daifukuna.com)
Stretch wrapper: Muller LCS, a material load-containment
solutions provider, has introduced what it calls “a reliable and
economical solution for pallet wrapping” with its new Octopus
1717C automatic rotary ring stretch wrapper.
The Octopus 1717C is priced competitively with automatic
rotary-arm and turntable machines in the 30 to 50 loads-per-hour range, Muller says. (Muller LCS, www.mullerlcs.com)
