Retractable-nose conveyor: SpanTech’s Pack
Expo exhibit featured its TranSorter retractable-
nose conveyor, which was designed specifically
for high-flex distribution centers and supply
chain applications. SpanTech touts the
TranSorter as having “revolutionary sorting capabilities in a high-
ly affordable alternative to bulky, big-dollar systems.”
The conveyor’s design allows it to simultaneously sort a wide
range of merchandise and parcels, from small ultra-lightweight
polybags to cartons weighing up to 50 pounds. (SpanTech,

Roller drive and control technology: Interroll’s EC310 24-volt
DC RollerDrive and ConveyorControl technology aims to lower
operating costs while enabling greater internal logistics flexibility
in distribution center operations.
The product has been available throughout Europe for nearly
three years and is often used to replace traditional, less advantageous high-voltage drive technology. Interroll’s exhibit at Pack
Expo marked the technology’s introduction to the North
American market.
“Our EC310 product launch gives North American OEMs (
original equipment manufacturers), systems integrators, plant manufacturers, and end users access to a proven alternative to traditional conveyor technologies that is significantly easier to configure, less costly to operate, more flexible in conveyance, and easier to maintain,” said Tim McGill, Interroll’s president of North
American operations. (Interroll, www.interroll.com)
Automated order fulfillment solutions: At Pack Expo,
Intelligrated introduced two new capabilities to its range of
mixed-load automated order fulfillment solutions. The company
showcased both a mixed-load palletizing solution and a variety-pack order fulfillment solution. Both products use advanced
robotics and software technology to automate the creation of
mixed-SKU (stock-keeping unit) pallet loads, retail-ready displays,
and variety-pack cases.
Intelligrated’s Alvey robotic mixed-load palletizing solution utilizes con-figurable end-of-arm tooling, software, and controls to handle multiple product types.
The company’s scalable variety-pack order fulfillment solution also uses flexible end-of-arm tooling to automate tasks such as case packing and unpacking,
depalletizing, and product singulation. This equipment will allow
retailers to accommodate consumer preferences for variety packs
of food, beverages, or household goods.
Both solutions integrate well with other automated system
components, including software, conveyors, and sortation and
order picking systems. (Intelligrated, www.intelligrated.com)
Plastic pallet: Orbis Corp., a manufacturer of sustainable
reusable packaging, has introduced a new line of plastic display
pallets for in-aisle or end-of-aisle displays.
The all-plastic modular display pallets can accommodate a wide
range of displays and structures, and are available in the following
footprints: 24 by 24 inches, 24 by 48 inches, and 48 by 48 inches.
Featuring a flat, smooth surface, the all-plastic display pallets
are easy to set up in a warehouse or co-packing facility, the company says. Once they are transported to the retailer, they can be
moved directly to the sales floor.
The display pallets are made from durable, nonporous plastic and
feature contoured corners. (Orbis, www.orbiscorporation.com)
Void fill: Sealed Air has introduced the Fill-Air Rocket inflatable
void-fill system, which can create 100 feet of film per minute.
The Fill-Air Rocket possesses a quick-start feature that instantaneously begins producing bags. The instant-start mechanism
triples bag production during the first 20 seconds of operation
versus Sealed Air’s Fill-Air Cyclone system and in some cases,
eliminates the need for void-fill accumulation.
Smaller and lighter than previous systems, the Fill-Air Rocket is
easy to install in a variety of packaging line configurations.

Conveyor component catalog: Emerson Industrial Automation
has introduced what it describes as the industry’s first “
interactive” printed conveyor-components catalog with an online mirror edition. A QR code on the front cover of the 400-page printed edition opens a mirror website, where the printed version’s
icons, product images, logos, and lists become links.
The “SmartGuide” catalog allows users to research and select
components, load a shopping cart, develop a bill of materials,
access drawings/technical data, and find distributors.
Introduced at Pack Expo 2013, the SmartGuide is compatible
with PCs, tablets, and smartphones. It can be accessed at
www.SystemPlastSmartGuide.com. (Emerson Industrial
