The Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA) and
the William Loveland College have announced an agreement
to offer a new Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.)
degree to TIA members and the larger logistics community.
William Loveland College conducts business as the Institute of
Logistical Management (ILM).
ILM has agreed to offer semester credit hours toward the
M.B.A. for anyone who has successfully completed TIA’s
Certified Transportation Broker program and TIA’s Ethics
in Transportation Brokerage course. TIA and ILM will also
continue to offer a joint program, which allows TIA to offer
ILM’s courses to its members and ILM students to have access
to TIA’s courses. The two organizations will “collaborate to
enhance existing course offerings while developing new curriculum [offerings] to meet the demands of the market,” they
said in an announcement.
The Transportation Intermediaries Association represents
transportation intermediaries of all disciplines, in domestic and international commerce. The Institute of Logistical
Management, in business since 1923, provides distance learning and online programs in transportation, logistics, and supply chain management.

With the number of Spanish-speaking warehouse employees
on the rise, lift truck fleet managers are challenged to ensure
that operators fully understand safe operation of their vehicles.
Recognizing that need, some lift truck makers have developed
training programs en español.
One of those is Hyster Co., which recently launched a
Spanish version of its “Best-in-Class” operator training program. The DVD set, available in Spanish-only or combined
Spanish and English kits, includes all of the components necessary to conduct the classroom portion of an OSHA-compliant
operator training program in Spanish. Hyster says the Spanish
dialect used will be understood by a majority of Spanish speakers, regardless of national origin.
Along with Hyster, other forklift makers that offer Spanish-language operator training materials include Crown Equipment
Corp., Yale Materials Handling, Cat Lift Trucks (multiple
languages), and Clark Material Handling. Spanish-language
instructional media are also available from most lift truck dealers as well as independent training and safety products firms,
including Forklift Training Systems and J.J. Keller.

The American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN)
has named Kathy Fulton as its executive director.
Fulton had been serving as the group’s interim
executive director since the death last August of
co-founder and president
John T. “Jock” Menzies.
The organization coordinates the donation of
logistics products and services to improve nonprofit organizations’ ability
to respond to disasters. It
was formed in 2005 following Hurricane Katrina.
From 2010 until her
appointment to the interim post last year, Fulton served as ALAN’s director
of operations while “on loan” to ALAN from her
employer, Saddle Creek Logistics Services, where
she was senior manager of technical services.
In a statement announcing the move, Mark
Richards, vice president of ALAN’s board, said the
group was “excited about [Fulton’s] taking on an
even larger leadership role as executive director and
the opportunities this will create for her to continue
to nurture her current relationships and expand
her impact in the disaster preparation and relief
communities.”
The organization also announced two new volun-
teer appointments. Joel D. Anderson, who retired
at the end of 2013 as president and CEO of the
International Warehouse Logistics Association
(IWLA), has joined the organization as an industry
liaison. Anderson will lead the strategy, research,
and implementation of private and public funding
initiatives to support ALAN’s annual operating
needs and programs, the group said.
Felicia C. Alexander, chief operations officer of
IMEX Connections, a logistics consulting firm, has
joined ALAN as the agency liaison for California.
Alexander will be the point of contact for emergency management and nonprofit organizations in the
state requesting assistance from ALAN.
DCV has written frequently about ALAN’s work,
including the 2010 article “A journey through hell
in Haiti,” which chronicled the group’s efforts
following the devastating earthquake there. Video
interviews about ALAN’s mission and accomplishments are available at www.dcvelocity.com/dcvtv.
