MESOCOAT LICENSES SURFACE
ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY
MesoCoat has acquired exclusive
commercial rights to the high density
infrared surface modification technology IP Portfolio from UT-Battelle,
LLC. This surface engineering technology was developed over the last
decade at the infrared processing center, part of the industrial materials
division of Oak Ridge National
Laboratory (ORNL). Through technology transfer collaboration efforts and
licensing of multiple patents, MesoCoat is commercializing this technology which enables the application of
coatings and cladding materials at
rates 1-2 orders of magnitude faster,
and with better quality than alternate
processes such as laser or weld
cladding or furnace processing,
according to the company. This High
Density Infrared technology enables
large areas to be rapidly clad with
wear or corrosion resistant metal or
cermet coatings. This technology has
the potential to revolutionize the coating and cladding industry because it
enables metallurgical bonding of
metal and ceramic coatings to be
applied very rapidly and at low cost to
large, previously unreachable areas
due to the dimensional limitation of
currently available equipments.
These areas include ship decks, building supports, reactor vessels and
equipments, bridges and pipes.
Additional benefits include the
reduced use of natural resources and
potential energy conservation, and
the elimination of reliance on environmentally damaging substances such
as chromate primers to protect large
