Cytec initiates sale process
for coating resins business
Cytec Industries Inc. has initiated a formal
sale process for its coating resins business.
J.P. Morgan Securities LLC, the company’s
financial advisor, is assisting Cytec with
the process. Cytec’s target is to complete
a transaction by the end of the year.
“After extensive analysis, we deter-
mined that the sale of our coating resins
business is our preferred alternative for
separating the business. Today’s an-
nouncement marks another significant
step forward in executing our portfolio
transformation strategy which will bring
additional focus to expanding our market
and technology leadership positions in
high growth advanced composite materi-
als and separation technologies applica-
tions,” said Shane Fleming, chairman,
president and CEO. “We are confident
that a sale of the coating resins business
coupled with other recent actions will
continue to create enhanced value for our
shareholders.”
Cytec has been pursuing a strategy to
increase the focus on its engineered mate-
rials, in process separation and additive
technology segments. As part of this strat-
egy, Cytec retained J.P. Morgan Securities
LLC to assist in an analysis of alternatives
available to effect a separation of its en-
tire coating resins business.
As part of this analysis, Cytec recently
announced the sale of its pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) product line to Henkel
for a$105 million. Full year 2011 sales for
the PSA product line were $94 million.
Cytec also announced earlier this year
the acquisitions of Umeco plc, an international provider of advanced composite
materials and Star Orechem International
Private Limited, an India-based manufacturer of extraction technology that supports the growth of the in process
separation segment.
Cytec said it does not intend to disclose
developments regarding the coating resins
sale process until a transaction is announced, which is estimated to occur later
this year.
The coating resins segment includes
radcure resins; liquid coating resins and
additives including waterborne resins,
solventborne resins, urethane resins and
additives; powder coating resins; and
amino crosslinkers.
Lanxess expands worldwide
availability of Bayferrox 912
LOM pigments
Lanxess is now offering Bayferrox 912
LOM, the yellow iron oxide pigment manufactured at its site in Porto Feliz, Brazil, for
sale worldwide. The pigment was launched
on the North and South American markets
years ago and due to its special product
properties has proven effective in paints and
coatings applications, primarily for the production of pigment pastes the company
said. “In light of the good market prospects,
we have expanded our worldwide range to
include the Bayferrox 912 LOM from our
Brazilian production site. Porto Feliz is an
essential component of our global production network and will remain so long-term,” said Roland Flindt, head of the
inorganic pigments business unit (IPG) in
North America.
Bayferrox 912 LOM is a micronized
yellow pigment with very good dispersibility. The pigment’s short, needlelike structure results in an outstandingly
low viscosity. With respect to color the
pigment resembles Bayferrox 3910 - a yellow pigment well-known throughout the
coatings industry - but is somewhat
darker and redder as a full shade.
Yellow pigments comprise nearly 30
percent of the worldwide market for synthetic iron oxide pigments. Lanxess offers
tailored yellow pigments for almost any application. Besides Bayferrox 912 LOM,
other high-performance specialties include
Bayferrox 943, for instance, which has a
distinctive orangey hue. Also noteworthy is
the yellow, low-silking pigment Bayferrox
915 with its unique particle morphology.
Lanxess has an annual capacity of
350,000 metric tons for the production of
iron oxide and chrome oxide pigments at
sites in Germany, Brazil and China. The
environmentally safe iron and chrome
oxide pigments in the established Bayferrox and Colortherm product ranges are
lightfast, weather-stable and highly resistant to chemicals. The current range of
synthetic iron oxide pigments comprises
more than 100 shades. The most important customers are the construction industry, followed by the paints and
coatings sector.
Nubirox 300 series presented
with Ringier Technology
Innovation Award 2012
Nubiola has been presented with one of the
most influential industrial awards in China,
the Ringier Technology Innovation Award
for the coatings industry. The award is in
recognition of those individuals and companies who have introduced and developed
a new idea, a new methodology, a new product or a new technology for manufacturing
production efficiency, cost effectiveness, user
convenience, which might result in energy
savings and more responsible clean manufacturing in the coatings industry.
A panel of independent judges for technical and product excellence has singled
out Nubiola’s zinc-free anticorrosive pigments, Nubirox 300 Series, for their technological contribution to China’s coatings
industry. Nubirox 300 Series, which includes Nubirox 301 and Nubirox 302, are
calcium strontium phosphosilicate-based
anticorrosive pigments, the latter having
an additional organic surface treatment.
Both products provide direct anodic
inhibition from the combination of the
calcium and strontium cations but also
good cathodic inhibition due to the basic-ity/alkalinity of the silica core the company said. The organic surface treatment
used in Nubirox 302 gives improved wetting and compatibility with different
binders and reduces the pigment/binder
interface. They can be used in a wide variety of water- and solvent-based binders.
