A report from BP said the United States increased oil
production by more than any other developed country in 2009, with most of these production gains coming from the Gulf of Mexico.
According to the annual report, Statistical Review of
World Energy 2010, the United States produced nearly
7. 2 million barrels of oil each day, a 7-percent increase
over 2008 totals. That was nearly enough to offset a
7.3-percent drop in production from the
Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries
(OPEC). OPEC’s production decline was its largest
since 1983, BP said.
In introducing the report, Tony Hayward, BP’s
since-deposed group chief executive, was mindful of
the irony of the findings in light of BP’s continued
struggles to contain the massive oil spill in the Gulf.
The data on U.S. oil production are “not an excuse for
anything, but a piece of the reality in which we all
live,” he wrote.
Of the countries surveyed, only Brazil, Azerbaijan,
Ecuador, and Peru grew their oil production at a faster
clip than the United States did. But the production of
all four countries combined was barely more than half
that of the United States, the report found.
oh, the irony!

ATC Technology Corp., a contract and reverse logistics company,
has agreed to be purchased by Genco Distribution System Inc.,
another contract and reverse logistics provider, for $512.6 million in cash, or $25 a share.
Following the acquisition, which is expected to close in the
fourth quarter, ATC would no longer be a publicly held company and instead would become a wholly owned subsidiary of the
privately held Genco. The transaction is subject to standard regulatory approvals, and ATC is free to solicit competing offers
until Aug. 17. The boards of both companies unanimously
approved the agreement, ATC said in a statement. Genco
declined comment on the transaction.
“Genco’s broad geographic footprint and service offerings will
enhance ATC’s current offerings to both current and potential
customers and create the potential for faster growth and
greater customer diversification than exists today as a stand-alone business,” Todd R. Peters, chairman and CEO of Downers
Grove, Ill.-based ATC, said in a statement.
Donald Rendulic, director, marketing and corporate communications for Pittsburgh-based Genco, said that if the transaction is consummated, Genco would benefit from ATC’s logistics
expertise in areas like hand-held devices, consumer electronics,
and the automotive aftermarket, especially in the drive train category. ATC would also bring strengths in kitting, co-packing, and
fulfillment that Genco currently lacks, Rendulic said.
