is projected to be up 21% and dollar
value 15%. Architectural coatings are
the largest coating segment with 57%
of the global volume in 2009 and 40% of
the value. Architectural coating volume
is off five percent compared to 2008 and
a six percent per year rate of growth is
projected through 2014. Original equipment manufacturers (OEM) coatings
are 28% of the 2009 poundage; volume
is down ten percent over 2008 and dollar value down 13%. A six percent per
year rate of growth is forecast through
2014 when OEM volume is projected to
be up 31% over 2009, but only 17%
when compared to 2008. Transportation applications had the sharpest
declines in 2009. Special purpose coatings are 15% of the pounds; volume is
down a modest two percent compared
to 2008. Marine coating growth continued in 2009, but there are significant
obstacles to future growth for these
coatings. Special purpose coatings are
forecast to grow four percent per year
through 2014.

DÜRR GROUP SIGNS
ORDERS IN BRAZIL AND CHINA
The Dürr Group, a systems supplier
that plans and builds complete paint
shops, has signed a € 28 million contract with Volkswagen (VW) to remodel large parts of VW’s paint shop at the
Brazilian passenger car plant in
Anchieta near São Paulo. The objective of remodeling the plant is to boost
capacity, productivity and quality in
the paint shop. To achieve this, Dürr
will be installing a total of 21 paint
and sealing robots. The Dürr Group is
benefiting from reviving demand from
the automotive industry in the
Chinese market. In the third quarter,
the mechanical and plant engineering
firm received three major painting
system orders worth a total of approximately €140 million. The largest of
the orders received by Dürr, worth
approximately €85 million, came from
FAW-VW, a joint venture between
Chinese automaker First Automotive
Works and Volkswagen. At FAW-VW’s
site in Chengdu, Dürr is building a
paint shop for VW models in the compact and midsize segments. Among
other things, Dürr is installing there
the first fully automated interior
painting facility in China with 24
EcoRPL robots. Altogether, 91 Dürr
robots will be used in the paint shop
for painting, sealing, handling, quality
measurement and other applications.
CAPAROL GROUP OPENS
PRODUCTION AND LOGISTICS
CENTER IN RUSSIA
The Caparol Group (DAW) has
opened a production and logistics
center in Malino, near Mos-cow/Russia. From its central location
the center supplies all regions of
Russia. With eight raw material silos,
which feed two production lines,
20,000 tons of powder products can
be produced annually. The warehouse
complex consists of a high-bay warehouse with more than 3,500 pallet
places for the company’s complete
product range and a warehouse for
block-type storage which provides a
further 1,500 pallet places for plas-ters/renders, facade surfacers, adhesives and fillers produced in the factory. The new center cost € 14 million
and is the largest foreign investment
in the company’s history.
ICA EXPANDS THREE
FACILITIES IN ITALY
ICA Group, the Italy-based manufacturer of special coatings for wood, has
decided to transfer three of its Italian
facilities to new, expanded sites, located in strategic areas within the Italian
furniture and woodworking hubs. The
branches/warehouses in question are
now located in Lissone (Milan), Gorgo
al Monticano (Treviso) and Manzano
(Udine). These new facilities feature
equipment for the production of sample coatings and paints. The new locations provide a suitable environment
to conduct application tests and the
staging of refresher courses. In addition, the facilities can be used for the
storage of finished products. The
expansion and relocation focuses on
the three strategic hubs, where 70% of
the Italian woodworking industry is
concentrated.
DEMAND FOR PAINTS AND
COATINGS TO GROW IN THE U.S.
U.S. demand for paints and coatings is
forecast to approach $23 billion in
2012, according to The Freedonia
Group’s new report titled, “Paints &
Coatings forecasts for 2012 & 2017.”
Volume gains are projected to accelerate from the sluggishness of the 2002-
2007 period, when an economic slowdown, combined with high raw material costs and increasingly stringent
environmental regulations took a toll
on the U.S. paints and coatings industry. Going forward, however, growth
will be aided by an improving outlook
for both construction and manufacturing activity. Architectural paints represent the largest segment of the overall
paints and coatings market, accounting for approximately half of demand
in both volume and value terms. The
market share held by traditional solvent-based coatings will continue to
erode as these products are replaced
by water-based, high solids, powders
and other non-solvent coatings.
