Cognis introduces DSX 3100 thickener
Cognis has recently launched DSX 3100,
a new nonionic associative thickener
suitable for all types of paints. DSX 3100
is a Newtonian polyurethane thickener
that is free from VOCs and alkylphenol
ethoxylates (APEs). It does not contain
heavy metals or solvents and is odor-free. It acts as a high shear viscosity
builder, which allows for reduction of KU
builders such as cellulose ethers and provides one-coat coverage capability. The
new thickener offers gloss, sag resistance
and leveling, as well as color acceptance,
making it suitable for all types of architectural and industrial paints, from premium flat and eggshell finishes to semi-gloss and gloss coatings. Its high efficiency in ICI viscosity (typically 20% up to
50% higher efficiency in formulations
tested) provides the opportunity to
reduce the total thickener content and
makes it ideal for paint formulations
where scrub or water resistance are
important.
EMERALD PERFORMANCE
MATERIALS EXPANDS COLOR
REALM DISPERSIONS PORTFOLIO
Emerald Performance Materials has
introduced Color Realm 1262 Series
zero-VOC color dispersions. Color
Realm 1262 Series, a full palette of
color dispersions specifically designed
for volumetric in-store tinting of paint,
is compatible with both aqueous and
non-aqueous coatings. The company
also produces Color Realm 1211 Series
zero-VOC color dispersions for in-plant tinting by weight.
BROOKFIELD LAUNCHES ITS
NEW POWDER FLOW TESTER
Brookfield Engineering has launched
its new Powder Flow Tester (PFT). The
Powder Flow Tester delivers analysis of
powder flow behavior in industrial processing equipment and is ideal for manufacturers who process powders daily
and want to minimize or eliminate the
downtime and expense that occur when
hoppers/silos fail to discharge.
Customers can also perform quality
control checks on incoming materials,
quickly characterize new formulations

for flowability and adjust composition
to match the flow behavior of established products. The Brookfield Powder
Flow Tester features a variety of test
options including: flow function, time
consolidation, wall friction and bulk
density. Time estimates for duration of
each test are automatically calculated
before start of test in case adjustments
are needed. The operator also has a
choice of graphical or tabular data output format for each test plus calculations for arching dimension, rathole
diameter and hopper half-angle.
NEW MICHEM GUARD 7140
Michem Guard 7140 is a new water-based large particle emulsion from
Michelman that improves rub and abrasion resistance in pigmented and semi-gloss coatings, inks and OPVs at very
low addition rates of two to five percent.
It can also be used to matte coatings and
varnishes to a smooth satin finish at five
to ten percent addition rates. Michem
Guard 7140 can be used in coatings that
go on exterior wood and wood composites, interior furniture and flooring as
well as inks and OPVs.
DOW INTRODUCES ECHELON MU 290
Dow has launched Echelon MU 290
specialty isocyanate, a uretonimine-modified methylene diphenyl di isocyanate (MDI)-based solution for adhesives, sealants, elastomers and coatings applications. Echelon MU 290
offers improved clarity and greater
handling and storage flexibility. It features innovative chemistry, improved
shelf life, and reduced emissions compared to conventional Dow products.
Echelon MU 290 also offers good compatibility for mixing and improved
clarity for the creation of products with
lighter color requirements. Echelon
MU 290 can be used for the production
of quasi and full prepolymers, and also
for two-component urethane coatings,
adhesives, sealants and solid and
microcellular elastomers.
BYK LAUNCHES ANTI-TERRA-250
BYK has introduced a new additive—
Anti-Terra-250—which is designed to
offer pigment stabilization resulting in
good color acceptance and low E values.
The wetting and dispersing additive is
recommended for water reducible
primers, emulsion paints and floorings.
It has a high solids content, is free of
solvents and leads to a controlled flocculation of pigments. Bridges are
formed between single pigment particles causing three-dimensional structures to develop. Through controlled
flocculation of pigments, flooding and
floating, settling and sagging of pigments is avoided. CW
