SDC Coatings patents
abrasion-resistant coating
U.S. 8,158,191 B2
SDC Coatings, Inc. has been awarded a
patent for a process for tinting a transparent, tintable, abrasion-resistant coating that is coated on at least one surface
of a substrate, comprised of applying a
polyurethane dispersion-based primer
to at least one surface of a polycarbon-ate or polyamide substrate; contacting
the primer applied to the substrate with
a coating composition that forms a
transparent, tintable, abrasion-resistant
coating upon curing, the coating composition is comprised of an aqueous-or-ganic solvent mixture having hydrolysis
products and partial condensates of at
least one of an epoxy functional silane
and a diol functional organopolysiloxane, and at least one multifunctional
crosslinker, wherein the multifunctional
crosslinker is comprised of a silylated
multifunctional anhydride, and wherein
the at least one of the epoxy functional
silane and the diol functional
organopolysiloxane is present in a
molar ratio to the multifunctional
crosslinker from approximately 10:1-
1: 10; an amount of water sufficient to
hydrolyze the at least one of the epoxy
functional silane and the diol functional
organopolysiloxane and the multifunctional crosslinker; and a blocked isocyanate; curing the coating composition
to form a transparent, tintable, abrasion-resistant cured coating; and tinting
the cured coating by immersing the
coated surface of the substrate in a dye
bath for the cured coating to absorb or
transmit an amount of dye sufficient to
allow up to 50% light transmittance
through the coated substrate.
