New rheology modifiers from Dow Coating Materials, a busi- ness unit of The Dow Chemical
Company, can improve surface aesthetics
and hiding across a broad range of binder
chemistries. ACRYSOL RM-1600 and
ACRYSOL RM-3030 Rheology Modifiers
join the business’ growing portfolio of
additives offering the ongoing demand of
flexibility formulators need to create robust paints with optimized performance
attributes across multiple paint lines.
“These versatile rheology modifiers
can help our customers solve the challenge
of delivering high shear thickness while
still providing formulation flexibility,”
said Carmen Rodriguez, North America
Additives marketing manager, Dow
Coating Materials. “These Newtonian
thickeners allow formulators to work
within a wide range of formulation re-
quirements, including the level of rheology
modifier demand, to deliver a product that
stands out from competitive offerings.”
ACRYSOL RM-1600 and ACRYSOL
RM-3030 Rheology Modifiers are hydro-
phobically-modified ethylene oxide-based
urethane (HEUR) chemistries that offer
good film build with excellent flow and
leveling behavior. These high-efficiency
ICI builders can be used in formulations
with high or low rheology modifier de-
mand and still deliver improved surface
smoothness and applied hiding.
ACRYSOL RM-1600 Rheology
Modifier is a new Newtonian HEUR
ICI builder that improves film build and
smoothness, especially in high solids and
small particle and composite forming
binder formulations. Common applications for these complex formulations
include high gloss trim paints, highly
toned deep base paints and accent paints.
ACRYSOL RM-1600 Rheology Modifier
decouples high-shear viscosity from mid-shear Krebb Units (KU) contribution for
formulation stability and reduced viscosity drop upon tinting for tailored rheology and paint differentiation.
ACRYSOL RM-3030 Rheology
Modifier also offers good film build
and excellent flow and leveling. This
ICI builder allows for reduced thickener
use without compromising stability, and
higher ICI efficiency with minimal KU
contribution for improved cost-in-use. Its
broad utility facilitates optimized rheology to easily upgrade performance across
paint lines and bindery types.
Datacolor Introduces New
Spectrophotometer for
Retail Paint & Hardware
Datacolor has launched the Datacolor
200 spectrophotometer. This new instrument, designed especially for paint retailers and hardware stores, contains color
measurement technology in a compact
form factor. Combined with the new
Datacolor Paint v. 2.0 software it provides industry leading color matching accuracy for paint and coating applications,
eliminating mis-tints while improving
productivity and ease of use.
By redesigning the instrument, the installation of the Datacolor 200 is greatly
simplified while at the same time reducing the need for calibration from every
8 hours to every two weeks. Datacolor
200’s sphere geometry, combined with
automatic gloss detection, assures accurate color measurement of either flat,
glossy or textured samples for perfect color formulation. In addition, its compact
design and integrated accessory drawer
and service indicator make it ideal for use
in the retail environment.
Charles Ross & Son Co.
Introduces New Washdown
Duty Ribbon Blenders
Charles Ross & Son Co. now offers
truly washdown duty Ribbon Blenders
in many standard sizes from ½ to 1000
cu.ft. Available is a 1-cu.ft. stainless steel
model equipped with all washdown
components including the motor, safety
limit switch, variable frequency drive,
stuffing boxes and knife gate discharge
valve. The dust-tight cover includes a
charging port with safety grating and
the U-shaped trough is surrounded by
a 100-psi ASME-stamped jacket for
heating/cooling.
Ross Ribbon Blenders are widely
used for mixing powders, grains, pellets, flakes and other dry blends. Small
amounts of liquid may be sprayed
throughout the batch during the blending cycle ensuring uniform distribution.
Wet applications such as pastes, slurries
and suspensions can also be prepared
in these blenders. The highly versatile
blending mechanism is delivered by a
horizontal agitator with characteristic
inner and outer helical ribbons precisely pitched to move materials in a well-balanced axial and radial flow pattern.
LUMIFLON FEVE Resins for
Industrial and Architectural
Applications
AGC Chemicals Americas Inc. offers
LUMIFLON fluoroethylene vinyl ether
(FEVE) resins for industrial and architectural applications. Topcoats formulated with LUMIFLON resins are
ultra-weatherable, offering outstanding
gloss and color retention and protection
from UV light, wind, rain and corrosion,
according to the company. LUMIFLON-based coatings ensure a longer life on
building exteriors and facades, bridges,
aircraft, automobiles, water towers and
solar panels, resulting in less need for
repainting and a substantial decrease in
lifecycle costs.
Used in paints and coatings for more
than 30 years, LUMIFLON, a transparent fluororesin, can be used to make
both clear and pigmented coatings in
more than 230 colors in high-gloss to
flat finishes. In addition, LUMIFLON
resins are the first solvent-soluble fluoropolymer resins for coatings that can
be cured at room temperature or at elevated temperatures. CW
