“These nine suppliers all helped create
a competitive advantage for PPG in 2016,
by maximizing value, meeting quality

Team Competes in Formula
SAE 2017 With Axalta-
Painted Car
Shanghai Tongji University’s College of
Automotive Studies students designed
and developed it. Axalta , their sponsor,
coated it.
The red, black and white patters on the
camouflaged body design of the race car
– dubbed TR 17 – could be a competitve
advantage for TJU during the Formula
SAE 2017, an auto design competition
organized by the Society of Automotive
Engineers (SAE) International.
The Spies-Hecker waterborne coating
decreased the car’s body weight compared to the old paint job, according
to a press release from Axalta, and was
applied at the company’s Asia-Pacific
Technology Center.
“The TR17 is specially designed to
bear patterns of China’s national flag at
the sides of its tail wings,” said Zhang
Renjun, technology and training manager at Axalta China Refinish, who is
responsible for TJU’s race car coating
project. “Axalta’s wet-on-wet coating
technology requires only 1.5 sprays per
step, completing the coating process of
TR17 with the best coating effects in
only three days.” CW
