More in store: Stanley Vidmar, a manufacturer of custom storage
solutions, now offers its customers another Lean manufacturing
solution: the 5S Cabinet. Made with a durable cabinet case featuring metal pegboard inserts, the 5S Cabinet helps businesses
better organize and manage their work space, resulting in
improved efficiency.
The 5S Cabinet has clear acrylic doors that provide instant visibility for an at-a-glance account of tools and/or parts at the point
of use. The solid hinged-door option provides additional metal
pegboard storage to optimize every inch of the cabinet’s space.
The new cabinet is named 5S after the workplace organization
principles of the same name followed by Lean manufacturing
operations. The 5Ss focus on organizing and managing a work
space to eliminate waste and improve work flow. (Stanley Vidmar,

Speed readers: Impinj Inc., a
developer of UHF Gen 2
radio-frequency identification (RFID) solutions, has released
the Speedway
Revolution reader.
The new reader
incorporates Autopilot
technology that automatically optimizes the
reader for its operating environment, allowing it
to deliver peak performance at all times and
eliminating the need for manual tuning.
The Speedway Revolution is available in both a four-port configuration and a two-port configuration. Measuring only 6.75 inches by 5. 5 inches by 1inch, the unit is 80 percent smaller than the
original Speedway reader and consumes less than half the power,
according to the company. (Impinj Inc., www.impinj.com)
Delivery guaranteed: New Penn, a regional LTL carrier serving the
Northeast United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico, introduces a
new suite of guaranteed service offerings. The new offerings
include a guaranteed-by-9-a.m. service that provides customers
with a level of morning delivery precision typically found only with
air freight or dedicated delivery service as well as a day-definite
service that guarantees delivery by 3: 30 p.m., rather than the end
of the day.
With the enhancements, the New Penn Guaranteed Precision
suite of services now includes guaranteed delivery by 9 a.m., guaranteed delivery by noon, guaranteed delivery by 3: 30 p.m. (
day-definite), guaranteed delivery within a single-hour window, and
guaranteed delivery within a multi-hour window.
New Penn, which is one of YRC Worldwide’s regional operating
companies, says the new services are covered by its no-hassle
guarantee. Under that guarantee, the carrier pledges to deliver the
shipments complete and on time or the invoice will automatically
be reduced to zero dollars with no need for the customer to file a
claim. (New Penn, www.newpenn.com)
Rugged features: Motorola has introduced the MC9500-K, a
rugged mobile computer designed to increase productivity,
streamline operations, and reduce total cost of ownership.
Researched and field tested to meet the needs of the most
demanding environments, the new device is suitable for use by
mobile workforces in the transportation and logistics, parcel/post,
direct store delivery, field service, and public safety industries.
Building on Motorola’s signature MC9000 Series, the MC9500-
K delivers a more rugged design, added data capture options, true
WAN technology independence through customer-swappable
WAN subsystems and keypads, more processing power, and a
high-capacity battery with indicators that display its state of charge
as well as overall battery health—all in a lighter, sleeker, and easi-er-to-use form factor.
In addition to these enhancements, the MC9500-K incorporates
interactive sensor technology (IST)—a new Motorola feature that
supports a host of motion-sensing applications that enable organizations to derive increased business value. For example, enterprises can increase worker accountability by detecting and logging
device drops. In addition, the IST improves power management by
enabling the MC9500-K to automatically revert to sleep mode
when not in use or if the display is face down. (Motorola,

Doing the heavy lifting: Toyota Material Handling, U.S.A., Inc.
(TMHU) has expanded its line of IC pneumatic lift trucks to include
four models with capacities of 33,000, 40,000, 44,000, and
51,000 pounds at a 36 inch load center. Developed for challenging work environments, these trucks are designed to cater to a
wide range of work terrains and tasks.
Toyota’s IC pneumatic lift trucks are equipped with a powerful
6.7-liter J-Series Hino diesel engine as well as Toyota’s exclusive
two-speed transmission. The engine features a common rail direct
fuel-injection system that produces less engine noise and lower
levels of emissions than other models. The two-speed, two-stator
transmission meets the Environmental Protection Agency’s Tier 3
compliance regulations and provides optimal performance. The
transmission is also designed to require less maintenance than a
comparable three-speed transmission.
Toyota’s large IC pneumatic lift trucks include a number of features designed with operator safety and comfort in mind. Toyota’s
synchronized steering option automatically corrects misalignment
between the angle of the steering wheel and turn angle of the
steer tires. This system maintains a consistent steering wheel position for improved hand placement during operation. Standard on
the truck is a deluxe steel cab that includes an integrated air conditioner and heater/defroster. The cab has a special mounting system that absorbs and reduces noise and vibration in the operating
compartment to reduce operator fatigue. The front and rear windows feature a pillar-less design, allowing a wide, unobstructed
field of vision to make load handling easier. (Toyota Material
Handling, U.S.A., Inc., www.toyotaforklift.com)
