Modular platform: Psion, a developer of
mobile computing solutions, launches Psion
Omnii, a sophisticated, highly modular
mobile computing platform designed to
reduce technology obsolescence for a
longer product lifecycle.
With Psion’s Open Source Mobility (OSM)
business model at its heart, Psion’s Omnii
platform delivers a new, adaptable, and
rugged handheld computing family of devices.
Because they are almost completely reconfig-urable in the field, devices built on the Psion
Omnii platform can be adapted for new technologies or even be repurposed as customer
needs change. The upgradeable and interchangeable modules are developed by Psion
and more than 200 developer partners around
the world.
The first device to be created from the new Omnii platform is
the Omnii XT10, which is a rugged modular handheld computer. It
comes with an IP65 and a 2.0m drop rating. With the inclusion of
the Texas Instruments OMAP3 processor, the XT10 performs up to
two times faster on industry benchmarks, the manufacturer says.
The Psion Omnii XT10 also features extended battery life with over
twice the capacity of comparable products and offers a battery
health grade feature that warns when the battery is nearing the
end of its lifecycle. (Psion Teklogix Inc., www.psion.com)
Image conscious: The Magellan 3300HSi high-performance
omni-directional scanner is the latest imaging-based scanner from
Datalogic Scanning. The Magellan 3300HSi is an in-counter single-plane scanner that offers the reading performance of laser scanners with added benefits, including the ability to read two-dimensional (2-D) bar-code symbologies.
The Magellan 3300HSi scanner uses new imaging technology
and software designed to considerably improve the scanner’s first
pass read rates on hard-to-read bar codes, such as truncated
codes and GS1 DataBar codes. Imaging technology significantly
enhances the reliability of the Magellan 3300HSi scanner by using
a solid-state design. It also adds new features normally not found
on single-plane scanners, such as the ability to capture images and
manage software upgrades and changes using a Micro-SD card.
This scanner also has the ability to read bar codes on mobile
phones. (Datalogic Scanning, www.scanning.datalogic.com)
Take charge: Advanced Charging Technologies (ACT) now provides industrial battery opportunity and fast charging systems. ACT
says its high-frequency MOSFET technology offers efficient and
clean AC/DC power. The lightweight technology also features a
small footprint and can be serviced in a modular fashion.
ACT’s Battery Feedback Device (BFD) uses wireless technology
to deliver instant data in graphed form. The data provides an
immediate picture of performance, such as water levels, amp
hours discharged, and equalizations. (Advanced Charging

Productivity.
Transport and weigh at
the same time.
Cascade’s iForks install in just minutes and work
on virtually any lift truck with an ITA hook-on
carriage. The wireless display uses Bluetooth
technology enabling you to view and track the
weight of individual loads, total weight of
multiple loads and more. Cascade’s iForks are
approved by NTEP for use in the USA and
accurate within 0.1% of the actual load weight.
