ENERGY-SAVING EQUIPMENT
HVLS fan climate control: MacroAir has introduced
AirEffect, a climate-control system for large-diameter high-vol-ume/low-speed (HVLS) fans. Through automation, AirEffect eliminates the need to constantly monitor and adjust the fans’ speed
and direction in response to temperature fluctuations. AirEffect
identifies and dictates the optimal operating speed and direction
for each fan based on the facility’s temperature and humidity.
MacroAir’s climate-control
system measures temperature
and humidity at two points,
calculates the heat index, and
identifies the best operating
speed and direction for each
fan. The user selects a desired
temperature range, and once
the indoor temperature rises above the specified range, the
fans will automatically run in the forward direction at the best
speed to create an appropriate cooling effect. When the indoor
temperature drops below the selected temperature range, the
fans will automatically run in reverse to redistribute the heated
air overhead, effectively eliminating hot and cold spots without
generating a discernable breeze.
Operating the AirEffect system is as simple as setting the
desired temperature range and enjoying a consistently comfortable environment and energy savings. If the fans are coupled with air conditioning, the cooling effect delivered by the
fans reduces the load on the air conditioner, decreasing utility
spend. In the winter, mixing the heated air will eliminate hot
and cold spots, leading to an overall reduction in heating costs.
Automation enables the fans to be fully optimized, maximizes
energy efficiency, and provides continuous comfort.
AirEffect components include a controller, sensors, and software. Through a single controller, AirEffect controls up to 30 fans
and provides the versatility to divide these fans into four zones.
With zoning, the user can customize fan operation parameters
for specific areas, like welding or the office.
Two sensors per zone, one at the ceiling and the other at the
floor, gather humidity and temperature data. These are independent external sensors, so the controller can be mounted in a
different room than the fans and sensors.
AirEffect’s software takes the temperature and humidity
measurements from the sensors and calculates the heat index
to understand what the temperature feels like due to humidity,
rather than just the air temperature. Each fan model and diameter with its corresponding airflow production is programmed into
the software. AirEffect calculates the speed and direction based
on the type of fan, the blade size, and the distance between the
closest wall or fan, delivering the desired effective temperature.

Battery charger: Ecotec has unveiled its new 5kW high-frequency Access industrial battery charger. The lightweight charger
features all the same characteristics as the rest of the Access
charger family, but in a smaller size.
The new charger is almost half the size of its predecessor at
13. 5 inches tall by 10. 5 inches wide and just 5. 5 inches deep.
However, its charge cycle efficiency exceeds 92 percent. The
charger is capable of charging batteries of various chemistries,
and when paired with Ecotec’s Battery Monitoring Unit, the 5kW
Access charger becomes a multi-voltage/multi-ampere-hour unit.
The newest Access charger complies with California Energy
Commission standards and is compatible with existing Access
charger stands. (Ecotec, www.ecotecbatcharger.com)
Compact linear lights: Smart Vision Lights, a designer and
manufacturer of high-brightness LED lights for industrial applications, has released the LM45 and LM75 series of compact linear
lights with MultiDrive and OverDrive Strobe (high-pulse operation) technologies.
The built-in MultiDrive feature allows the user to employ either
series in continuous operation or OverDrive, depending on wiring
method. The industry-standard five-pin M12 quick-disconnect
cable makes for simple wiring. Each series also features over-current protection, PNP and NPN strobe input, and continuous
operation or strobe mode. With a housing that’s just 51 mm (two
inches) long, the LM45 puts out unprecedented levels of light in
a small footprint.
Multiple lensing options give this light a broad spectrum of
illumination area, while the 0– 10 V analog control offers total
command over intensity. The mini linear lights come standard
with a narrow lens, although wide and line lenses are available.
The LM45 includes four high-output LEDs, while the LM75 has
eight LEDs. (Smart Vision Lights, www.smartvisionlights.com)
Energy-saving roofing membranes: Sustainability and
environmental conservation are two of the top priorities in
today’s construction industry. Carlisle SynTec Systems’ EPDM
(ethylene propylene diene monomer) membranes offer an
eco-friendly solution for nearly any
low-slope roofing project, regardless of
geography, the company says.
Carlisle’s EPDM membranes are
available in both white and black for
use in different geographic areas and
climate zones. In northern and central
climates, the solar thermal benefits of black EPDM help to reduce
heating costs, which are typically three to five times greater than
air-conditioning costs. Reflective white EPDM helps to reduce
cooling costs in warmer southern climates. (Carlisle SynTec
