Supply chain planning solution: Insight Inc., a provider of supply chain planning solutions, has released version 4. 6 of SAILS
(also known as Insight Supply Chain Optimizer) and Insight
Enterprise Optimizer (IEO), which the company describes as the
industry reference standards for strategic supply chain design.
The latest versions of these two solutions incorporate new features that address sustainability, manufacturing options, transportation rate databases, and managerial preferences.
SAILS is a technology solution for analyzing and optimizing a
supply chain network. The new version provides databases and
advanced analytics to address supply chain sustainability audits.
The solution can now measure and report energy consumption
and carbon emissions for the entire supply chain, including procurement, manufacturing, warehousing, and transportation
activities. It can also report ton-miles (or the equivalent), which is
useful for estimating energy efficiency and carbon emissions for
various transport modes.
With the new version of SAILS, users can now compare various network designs to assess what would be the most energy-efficient network, the network with the least carbon emissions,
and the least expensive network, among other criteria. This functionality allows companies to analyze the impact of outsourcing
decisions, especially those that result in very long international
supply chains, not just in terms of cost but also with respect to
energy and carbon emission impacts.
The solution also allows managers to specify min/max, volume,
energy, and carbon emission limits for arbitrary subsets of facility locations, production lines, and processes. This capability
enables the user to, for example, directly incorporate cap-and-trade–based carbon emission restrictions or limit the number of
locations or processes of a specific type or in a given area.
The system’s managerial rules have also been improved. Users
can now specify managerial rules such as “If x happens, then y
must/must not happen.” This change enables the user to assess
the impact of such preferences or requirements with fewer
model exercises and less analysis.
Insight has also released a new version of its sales and operations planning solution, Insight Enterprise Optimizer. IEO 4. 6
includes all of the above new features for the SAILS solution. In
addition, it now enables users to balance all relevant enterprise
operations costs with the cost and demand impact of new marketing initiatives. Additionally, with IEO 4. 6, a user can add energy and carbon emission restrictions to the traditional capacity
limits associated with procurement, manufacturing, throughput,
storage, and so on. (Insight Inc., www.insightoutsmart.com/)
China-Europe rail service: Ceva Logistics has launched a new
China-to-Europe railway service that connects Suzhou in China
with the Netherlands in Europe. The total transit time for the
whole journey is approximately 28 days. The new service will
leave daily from Suzhou and travel north across Russia, to arrive
in the Netherlands.
According to Ceva, the new service offers significant cost savings compared with air freight and shorter transit times by 13 to
15 days than ocean freight.
Ceva provides GPS tracking and visibility throughout the journey. It also offers specially insulated packaging materials to protect the products against extreme temperatures. (Ceva Logistics,
