Cold-tough handheld computer: Motorola
Solutions Inc. has introduced a rugged handheld that is designed to withstand cold environments: the Omnii XT15f.
The Omnii XT15f is the latest addition to
the Psion Omnii line of rugged handhelds.
(Psion was acquired by Motorola last year.)
The unit is designed for use in freezers that
house perishable food and temperature-con-
trolled refrigerators that store medications.
The extreme cold of these environments often
slows mobile computers’ displays
and drains most batteries. On
top of that, condensation often
builds on the computers as a
worker moves back and forth
from a freezer to a hot and
humid loading dock. These envi-
ronmental conditions can
destroy most mobile computers.
Motorola’s new freezer and con-
densation-rated mobile comput-
ers are engineered to work in
these demanding conditions.
The modular Omnii XT15f
industrial mobile computer is
suitable for data capture and
traceability applications in food production
and pharmaceutical facilities, warehouses,
and the grocery market as well as ports and
rail yards in cold and humid climates.
The Omnii XT15f’s specialized keyboards
are designed to resist freezing. Users can
overcome ice build-up by simply pressing the
keys.
The Omnii XT15f is available in condensa-tion-resistant (Chiller) and condensation-free
(Arctic) models. It also comes with freezer batteries designed specifically for ultra-low temperatures. The Arctic variant’s battery can last
two times longer than a traditional battery at
- 30 degrees Celsius, the company says. It also
features an integrated heater, which eliminates internal display fogging caused by
extreme temperature fluctuations. (Motorola

Cloud-based voice solution: Voxware, a
provider of voice solutions, has updated its
Cloud Voice Management Suite (VMS) for the
enterprise. Cloud Enterprise VMS enables
organizations of all sizes to migrate to a
cloud-based voice management system. In
addition, Voxware has now folded its complete VMS into the cloud-based version.
Voxware says the cloud-based approach
can be up and running more quickly than the
fastest full-fledged voice solution. It is available as a software-as-a-service (SaaS) offering. (Voxware, www.voxware.com)
Pallet rack protection: Wireway Husky Corp. has released a new wire product,
Aisle Shield. Aisle Shield provides fall protection for pallet rack aisles.
The device is made out of all-steel, welded wire. Unlike netting, which acts to
catch falling product and is difficult to install, Aisle Shield prevents the product from
falling in the first place, thus yielding a safer work environment and more efficient
material handling, according to the manufacturer.
Aisle Shield, which can be installed with engineered eyebolts, meets the demands
of regulatory agencies for fall protection into pallet rack aisles. (Wireway Husky,
