High-reflectivity coating from Valspar
Patent No. U.S. 7,244,506 B2
Valspar Sourcing, Inc. has been
granted a patent for a coated substrate
article comprised of a substrate coated
with a coating composition, wherein the
coating composition comprises a binder
comprising a polyester resin that
includes a cycloaliphatic group and has
a number average molecular weight
from 1,000-40,000, the binder comprises less than 40% weight aromatic group
containing compound, and a pigment,
wherein the weight ratio of pigment to
binder is greater than 0.9:1, and wherein the binder, when blended with rutile
TiO2 at a solids loading of 50 weight
percent and coated to a dried film thickness of 0.00254 cm, exhibits a Y-value of
at least 85.5.
BAYER MATERIAL SCIENCE PATENTS
AQUEOUS BINDER DISPERSIONS
Patent No. U.S. 7,232,860 B2
Bayer Material Science AG has
obtained a patent for an aqueous binder
dispersion comprised of at least one
copolymer (P) containing carboxylic
acid and/or carboxylate groups, the
copolymer (P) containing structural
units of carboxyl-free (meth)acrylic
esters with a cycloaliphatic structure,
and at least 25% mol of the carboxylic
acid and/or carboxylate groups of the
copolymer (P) in the dispersion being
present in triethanolamine-neutralized
form, wherein the copolymer (P) is prepared from the group of the monomers
(M) comprised of (M1) 10-50% by
weight of cycloaliphatic esters of
(meth)acrylic acid or mixtures thereof,
(M2) 20-60% by weight of hydroxyl-functional free-radically polymerizable
monomers, (M3) 1-5% by weight of car-boxyl-functional free-radically polymerizable monomers, (M4) 0-10% by weight
of free-radically polymerizable
monomers containing phos-phate/phosphonate groups or sulphonic
acid/sulphonate groups, and (M5) 10-
60% by weight of hydroxyl- and carboxyl-free (meth)acrylic esters with
C1 to C18 hydrocarbon radicals in
the alcohol moiety and/or vinylaro-matics and/or vinyl esters, the sums
of the components adding up to 100%
by weight.
U.S. ARMY PATENTS
SMART COATING SYSTEM
Patent No. U.S. 7,244,500 B2
The U.S. as represented by the
Secretary of the Army, Washington,
D. C. has been granted a patent for an
active coating comprised of a plurality
of layers arranged in a stack and overlying a substrate, the stack of layers
includes a sensor layer for sensing
particular conditions; a visual display
layer for providing visual indication of
conditions sensed by the sensor layer;
and a switch layer interposed between
the sensor layer and the visual display
layer, the switch layer in electrical
communication with the sensor layer
and the visual display layer for electrically enabling the visual display
layer to selectively provide visual indication of the conditions sensed by the
sensor layer.
YUNG CHI PAINT AND VARNISH
PATENTS CURABLE COATING
Patent No. U.S. 7,247,668 B2
Yung Chi Paint and Varnish Mfg.
Co., Ltd. has received a patent for a
curable coating composition capable of
forming an embossment-like texture,
comprised of a polyester; a curing
agent for curing the polyester; a composite solvent including at least two
solvents having different dissolving
powers for the polyester; and a wax
incompatible with the polyester,
wherein the composite solvent
includes a cyclic ketone and an aromatic solvent.
TRONOX PATENTS ZIRCONIA-
TREATED TI02 PIGMENTS
Patent No. U.S. 7,238,231 B1
Tronox LLC has obtained a patent
for a process for manufacturing zirco-nia-treated titanium dioxide, comprised
of the steps of (a) forming a mixture
comprised of a titanium dioxide material in water; (b) wet milling the mixture;
(c) after step b, optionally depositing on
the wet milled titanium dioxide material one or more inorganic oxides selected
from the group consisting of the oxides
of aluminum, boron, cerium, phosphorus, silicon, tin, titanium and zirconium; (d) achieving a pH of the mixture
resulting from steps b or c between 5
and 9, whereby the titanium dioxide
material is sufficiently flocculated to be
recovered by vacuum or pressure filtration; (e) removing the titanium dioxide
material from the mixture by vacuum
or pressure filtration; (f) washing the
titanium dioxide material recovered by
filtration; (g) converting the washed
titanium dioxide material to a fluid dispersion by addition of one or more alkaline water-soluble zirconium reagents
selected from the group consisting of
ammonium zirconyl carbonate, the
water-soluble ammonium zirconyl carboxylates and mixtures of these; and (h)
drying the dispersion to yield a dry zirconia surface treated titanium dioxide
powder.
HIGH ABRASION RESISTANT COATING
