Kansai Paint patents vehicle coating
Patent No. U.S. 7,473,444 B2
Kansai Paint Co. has obtained a
patent for a method of forming a coating film on a vehicle body comprised of
the steps of coating the vehicle body
with a thermosetting and photocur-able clear coating composition to form
a wet coating film heating the wet
coating film at 70°C to 160°C for 10 to
20 minutes to obtain a semicured coating film having a hardness between
2B to H on the pencil hardness scale,
grinding and polishing the semicured
coating film and irradiating the semicured coating film with ultraviolet
light having a wavelength of 200 to
450 nm at a dosage of 500 to 1,500
mJ/cm2 for three to 60 seconds to cure
the coating film. The clear coating
composition is comprised of a resin
containing one or more radical-poly-merizable unsaturated groups and
one or more thermosetting functional
groups per molecule, a crosslinking
agent, a photopolymerization initiator
and an organic solvent.
PPG PATENTS BONDING OF
POWDER COATING COMPOSITIONS
Patent No. U.S. 7,468,401 B2
PPGIndustries has received a
patent for a process for manufacturing
a powder coating composition com-
prised of the steps of providing a base
composition comprised of non-leafing
pigment particles and a polymeric
binder; mixing the base composition at
an elevated temperature; adding flake-
like, color effect pigment particles into
the base composition to produce a pig-
ment composition, the pigment compo-
sition has an initial particle size distri-
bution with fine particles; heating the
pigment composition to a temperature
to achieve a second particle size distri-
bution substantially without fine par-
ticles, wherein the temperature is
more than 2°F greater than the TG of
the pigment composition; mixing the
pigment composition produced in the
previous step at the temperature for a
predetermined time period; and cooling
the pigment composition to produce the
powder coating composition.
BASF COATINGS PATENTS
AQUEOUS COATING MATERIAL
Patent No. U.S. 7,479,520 B2
BASF Coatings AG has received a
patent for an aqueous coating material
that is substantially or completely free
from volatile organic compounds. It is
comprised of a mixture of from 50% to
95% by weight of at least one aqueous
primary dispersion comprising a polymer having a diameter <500 nm comprised a controlled free-radical micro-emulsion or miniemulsion polymerization product of at least one olefinically
unsaturated monomer in the presence of
at least one hydrophobic additive,
wherein the polymer is at least one of a
dispersed solid polymer particle, an
emulsified solid polymer particle, a dispersed liquid polymer particle, an emulsified liquid polymer particle, and a dispersed solid core-shell particle, and from
five to 50% by weight of at least one secondary aqueous polyurethane dispersion
comprising at least one polyurethane
and at least one light stabilizer that is at
least one of a regenerable free-radical
scavenger, all percents by weight based
on the aqueous coating material.
COATING CONTAINING ISOCYANATE-FUNCTIONAL DISPERSED POLYMERS
Patent No. U.S. 7,479,525 B2
E.I. Du Pont De Nemours and
Company has been granted a patent for
an isocyanate adduct useful as an iso-
cyanate crosslinking agent in solvent-
borne coating compositions, wherein the
isocyanate adduct is a product obtained
by the reaction of a gelled acrylic poly-
mer with an excess of polyisocyanate
compounds. The gelled acrylic polymer
is dispersed in an organic liquid carrier,
and consists essentially of a crosslinked
core comprised of polymerized ethyleni-
cally unsaturated monomers, wherein
the core is not soluble in the organic liq-
uid carrier, and linear stabilizer poly-
meric components chemically grafted to
the core, wherein the linear stabilizer
components have weight average molec-
ular weights in the range of 500-20,000
as determined by GPC (gel permeation
chromatography) using polystyrene as
standard, wherein the stabilizer compo-
nents comprise polymerized ethylenical-
ly unsaturated monomers; the stabilizer
components are soluble in the organic
liquid carrier; the core, the stabilizer
polymeric components or both contain
isocyanate-reactive hydroxy and/or sec-
ondary amine functional groups
attached thereto; and the excess of poly-
isocyanate compounds are present in an
amount so that the ratio of NCO to
OH/NH groups ranges from 5:1 to 50:1.
CURABLE URETHANE POLYMER
ADHESIVES AND COATINGS
Patent No. U.S. 7,479,519 B2
Mallard Creek Polymers, Inc. has
obtained a patent for a curable urethane
polymer adhesive or coating consisting
essentially of a latex comprised of at
least one ethylenically unsaturated
monomer and an aliphatic conjugated
diene monomer, a hydroxyl functional
monomer and a colloid with hydroxyl
functionality selected from the group
consisting of polyvinyl alcohols, glycols
and hydroxethyl cellulose, present with
the ethylenically unsaturated monomer
and hydroxyl functional monomer during polymerization so as to become incorporated into the latex and a moiety having isocyanate functionality. CW
