PPG patents waterborne coating
Patent No. U.S. 7,473,442 B2
PPG Industries has been granted a
patent for a method of coating a plastic
substrate comprised of mixing together a
first component of a coating composition
and a second component of a coating
composition to form a mixture thereof,
wherein the first component is comprised
of an aqueous dispersion comprised of an
aliphatic polycarbonate-polyurethane
polymer; and an acrylic polyol having a
number average molecular weight of 500
to 4,000; and the second component is
comprised of a material having functional groups reactive with the functional
groups of the acrylic polyol and/or the
polycarbonate-polyurethane polymer;
applying the mixture to the plastic substrate; and allowing the mixture to coalesce to form a substantially continuous
film on the substrate, wherein the plastic
substrate is constructed of polyvinyl chloride, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene,
and/or polycarbonate.
MERCK PATENTS PIGMENTS
Patent No. U.S. 7,479,323 B2
Merck Patent has obtained a patent for
an encapsulated pigment comprised of
an outer water-soluble shell. The shell is
comprised of a water-soluble film former
of polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) encapsulating a core. The core is comprised of at
least one effect pigment which is a
pearlescent pigment or a multilayered
pigment based on SiO2 flakes, glass
flakes, or TiO2 flakes, and, optionally, one
or more solvents and/or conventional
additives.
HENKEL PATENTS PEELABLE
HOT MELT ADHESIVE
Patent No. U.S. 7,470,740 B2
Henkel has been granted a patent for an
adhesive comprised of a thermoplastic
elastomer selected from the group con-
sisting of styrene-ethylene-propylene,
polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene-ethyl-
ene/propylene)-b-polystyrene and mix-
tures thereof, a fully hydrogenated or
partially hydrogenated hydrocarbon
tackifying resin, a plasticizer and a phe-
nol modified aromatic resin.
KANSAI PAINT PATENTS
AQUEOUS RESIN DISPERSIONS
Patent No. U.S. 7,479,524 B2
Kansai Paint has received a patent for a
process for producing an aqueous resin
dispersion in which the average particle
diameter of the dispersed resin is not
more than 500 nm, comprised of finely
dispersing a monomeric mixture containing fatty acid-modified polymerizable unsaturated monomer and other
polymerizable unsaturated monomer
which is copolymerizable with the
monomer in an aqueous medium in
such a manner that the dispersed particles have an average particle diameter
not more than 500 nm, and polymerizing
the resulting emulsified product and
wherein the other polymerizable unsaturated monomer contains polymerizable
unsaturated monomer which contains
straight chain or branched chain hydrocarbon group having at least six carbon
atoms, at a ratio within a range of 1-30%
by weight, based on the combined weight
of the fatty acid-modified polymerizable
unsaturated monomer and other polymerizable unsaturated monomer.
DUPONT PATENTS PROCESS
FOR PRODUCING TITANIUM DIOXIDE
Patent No. U.S. 7,476,378 B2
E.I. DuPont deNemours & Co. has
obtained a patent for a process for pro-
ducing titanium dioxide comprised of
providing a quantity of liquid titanium
tetrahalide for reacting with an oxygen-
containing gas; vaporizing a first portion
of the liquid titanium tetrahalide and
reacting the titanium tetrahalide vapor
and the oxygen-containing gas, in a first
stage of a reaction zone, the reaction zone
temperature being sufficient to form a
reaction product at least containing tita-
nium dioxide and oxygen-containing gas
and passing the reaction product to at
least one additional stage of the reaction
zone; and charging at least one addition-
al portion of the liquid titanium tetra-
halide directly into the at least one addi-
tional stage of the reaction zone at a tem-
perature below the boiling point of the
titanium tetrahalide, at the charge pres-
sure of the titanium tetrahalide, to cool
the titanium dioxide and to react with
the oxygen-containing gas to form addi-
tional titanium dioxide, under conditions
sufficient to form a product substantially
free of titanium tetrahalide.
PIGMENTS COMPRISED OF
ALUMINA HYDRATE AND A DYE,
Patent No. U.S. 7,479,324 B2
Saint-Gobain Ceramics & Plastics, Inc.
has received a patent for a pigment
comprised of an alumina hydrate particulate material and a dye, the dye
being directly covalently bonded to an
oxygen atom on the surface of the alumina hydrate particulate material.
MICHELMAN PATENTS
PRIMER COATING
Patent No. U.S. 7,470,736 B2
Michelman has obtained a patent for a
primer coating for enhancing adhesion of liquid toner to a polymeric substrate. The coating is comprised of a
mixture of from approximately 60%-
95% weight of a dispersion of a copolymer of ethylene and acrylic or
methacrylic acid; 5%-40% of a compatible adhesion enhancer selected
from the group consisting of an
aliphatic polyurethane dispersion, a
hydrogenated hydrocarbon rosin or
rosin ester dispersion, and an amorphous acrylic polymer dispersion; and
from 0.05%-1.0% by weight of a metal
hydroxide. CW
