BASF receives design award for
XFine automotive color
innovation
BASF Coatings has been honored with a
design award for XFine, its automotive
color innovation. The German Design
Council selected the paint manufacturer
as a winner of the 2011 Automotive
Brand Contest, the first international
brand and design competition for the automotive industry.
“Being selected as a winner of the Au-
tomotive Brand Contest for this intensive
metallic special effect paint underscores
that our design and technology compe-
tence is highly valued and that XFine has
helped us to attract a great deal of inter-
est,” said BASF color designer Mark Gut-
jahr. “As a coatings manufacturer, we are
highly honored to receive the award. After
all, nearly all the other prize winners are
our customers, the automakers.”
XFine has also been nominated for the
2012 German Design Award, one of Ger-
many’s most prestigious design awards,
sponsored by the German Ministry of
Economics and Technology (BMWi).
Use grind gages more consistently.
Little Joe Industries offers the ADM Automatic Draw-Down Machine for use with
grind gages. The ADM automates the draw down process controlling scraper
angle, speed, and force. Since these aspects are no longer operator dependent your grind gage draw-downs will be more consistent while requiring less
operator training and supervision.
Uses existing grind gages and scrapers from your current supplier.
US and foreign patents apply.

Hempel signs contract
with Vale
Hempel recently signed a contract with
Brazilian mining giant Vale, one of the
world’s largest iron ore producers, to
supply coatings for a five-vessel conversion project. The Hempel fouling release
coating Hempasil X3, will help Vale reduce its vessel maintenance costs, fuel
consumption and green house gas and
biocide emissions.
Danish-based Hempel will supply
150,000 liters of its third generation fouling release, Hempasil X3, or advanced tin-free antifoulings for Vale’s forthcoming
five-vessel conversion project.
Five of Vale’s very large crude carriers
(VLCCs) will be converted to very large
ore carriers (VLOCs) at the Yulian Shipyard and at the Huraung Dan Dong Shipyard in China.
Hempel has been working closely with
Vale, who plans to extend its fleet of ships
to 50 by the end of 2013. “The shipping
industry is facing increasing pressure from
governments and legislative authorities to
reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said
Torben Rasmussen, group product manager, Hempel A/S. “In response, many
shipowners have set their own environ-
