Patent No. U.S. 7,842,751 B2
Kansai Paint Co. has obtained a patent for
a water-based paint composition comprised
of an emulsion resin, melamine resin and
hydrophobic solvent, wherein: the emulsion
resin is fine resin particles having core/shell
type multilayered structure composed of the
core made of a copolymer obtained by
copolymerization of 0.1-30% mass of polymerizable unsaturated monomer having at
least two polymerizable unsaturated groups
per molecule and 70-99.9% mass of other
polymerizable unsaturated monomer, and
the shell made of a copolymer obtained by
copolymerization of 5-50% mass of vinyl
aromatic compound and 50-95% mass of
other polymerizable unsaturated monomer,
wherein the solid mass ratio of the copoly-mer/copolymer is within a range of 10/90-
90/10; the melamine resin has a
weight-average molecular weight within a
range of 1,000-5,000; the hydrophobic solvent is an alcoholic solvent; and the water-based paint composition is comprised of the
emulsion resin within a range of 10-80 mass
parts, the melamine resin within a range of
5-50 mass parts, and the hydrophobic solvent within a range of 10-100 mass parts,
per 100 mass parts of solid resin content in
the water-based paint composition.

Otsuka Chemical patents
aqueous-medium dispersion
Patent No. U.S. 7,846,249 B2
Otsuka Chemical Co., Ltd. has been
granted a patent for a pigment aqueous-medium dispersion being a dispersion of a
pigment in an aqueous medium, wherein
the pigment is a flaky titanic acid obtained
by treating a layered titanate with an acid,
reacting the treated layered titanate with
an organic basic compound to swell or delaminate an interlaminar portion of the
treated layered titanate and obtain an intermediate flaky titanic acid, and treating
the intermediate flaky titanic acid with a
metal alkoxide in an aqueous medium to
obtain the flaky titanic acid, the flaky titanic acid having an average longer diameter of 5 to 30 μm and an average thickness
of 0.5 to 300 nm.

Patent No. U.S. 7,851,536 B2
Rutgers, The State University, New
Brunswick, NJ has received a patent for a
flame-retardant coating composition consisting of a cross-linked thermosetting polymer varnish, wherein the polymer is
selected from the group consisting of
polyurethane, alkyd polyester, and cross-linked polyacrylate; a metal hydroxide
present in an amount from approximately
25-35% by weight of the composition; an
alcohol and water.
Chroma patents paint
composition
Patent No. U.S. 7,851,545 B2
Chroma Australia Pty Limited has been
granted a patent for a water-based artists’
paint composition consisting essentially of
at least one pigment in an effective amount
to provide the desired pigmentation; at least
one alkali soluble polymer in an amount effective to increase the open time of the composition so that the paint composition
remains workable and may be blended and
altered for several hours and for as long as
a day, the polymer being selected from polymers soluble at ambient temperature and
pressure in an aqueous solution having a
pH of from about 7 to 11; at least one sub-
stituted amine in an amount effective to adjust the pH to about 7 to 11, the amine selected from C1-6 alcohol amines, C1-6
alkyl C1-6 alcohol amines and mixtures
thereof; a binding effective amount of at
least one water dispersible acrylic polymer;
and an effective amount of at least one alkali soluble or alkali swellable thickener.
Bostik patents hot
melt adhesive
Patent No. U.S. 7,838,590 B2
Bostik, Inc. has been granted a patent for a
hot melt adhesive composition comprised
of a blend of the following components:ap-proximately 1-20% by weight of a styrene-ethylene-ethylene-propylene-styrene
random block copolymer; 10-70% by

Axion Patents Fire
Coating Process
Axion International Holdings Inc. has announced its third patent this year for a new
fire-retardant coating technology. The coating formulation was patented earlier this
year. Two new patents cover the process for
modifying the formulation and applying the
coating. The coating can be used on Axion’s
structural composite materials and in other
applications. The new patent “gives added
protection, so either Axion or an Axion-ap-proved entity can perform the coating procedure,” the company reports. The patent
allows Axion to establish standards and approvals for the coating’s application. The
coating can be used on Axion’s recycled
plastic railroad ties, structural building
products and other applications. CW
