PPG Completes Colorful
Communities Project in
Soborg, Denmark
PPG has announced the completion
of a Colorful Communities project in
Soborg, Denmark, that helped to revitalize and add shelter and seating to the
parkour area of the City’s Arena, an outdoor activity space adjacent to the Hoje
Gladsaxe housing project. The Colorful
Communities program provides PPG
employees and products along with financial contributions to bring color and
vitality to communities where our company operates around the world. The
program increases PPG’s commitment
to invest in communities by adding $10
million to support efforts made during a
10-year period.
The project brought together more
than 30 volunteers who are employees
at PPG’s nearby architectural coatings,
automotive refinish, and protective and
marine coatings operations in Soborg to
spend two days revitalizing the parkour
area. PPG provided more than $18,500
for the project, as well as about 150 liters
of DYRUP Façade Extra paint products
in 10 colors.
Young residents who use the City’s
Arena (Byens Arena) – an outdoor area
that encourages movement, activity and
play, mostly for residents of the adjacent 2,500-unit Hoje Gladsaxe housing
project – expressed a desire for development and beautification of the parkour
area. There was a need to make the area
more welcoming in the hope of inviting
more use. Large concrete features were
installed to provide shelter and accommodation for visitors, and artist Anders
Benmouyal facilitated a workshop where
PPG employees and Hoje Gladsaxe residents came together and decorated the
new concrete features.
Goodguys Custom Rod of the Year Award won by PPG-painted Studebaker
A gleaming black 1953 Studebaker – customized and painted
by Alan Johnson and his team at Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop in
Gadsden, Alabama, using PPG automotive refinish products –
was named the 2016 Goodguys Custom Rod of the Year. The
award was presented at the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association’s 19th annual Southwest Nationals in November at West-World of Scottsdale.
The Studebaker, owned by Paul and Betty Gilliam of Birmingham, Alabama, was selected from a competitive field of seven
custom rod finalists awarded at regional Goodguys events the
past year. Goodguys defines “custom rod” as a car that “
tastefully blends customizing techniques or factory stock bodies with
modern-day performance, engineering, components and styling.” Custom rods from 1949 to 1972 were eligible to enter the
contest. In the judges’ eyes, the Studebaker met the qualifications exceptionally well ... well enough to be named the winner.
“Competition is always stiff for Goodguys awards,” said John
Drummond, editor of the Goodguys Goodtimes Gazette. “We
get the best of the best going for the top prizes, and it’s never
easy to pick just one, especially in the custom rod category. But
this car was different. Alan Johnson and the Gilliams built a mas-
terpiece. It combines European coach-building with contempo-
rary style mixed with American hot rod essentials. They have a
car they can be proud of.”
Johnson has used PPG products since 1995. Painter Greg
Chalcraft applied DELTRON DBC9700 Basecoat, GLOBAL
REFINISH SYS TEM D8152 Performance + Glamour Clearcoat,
D8115 Matte Clearcoat and D8117 Semi-Gloss Clearcoat to
give the car its award-winning deep black finish. No stranger
to prestigious awards, Johnson’s cars have won several oth-
er significant Goodguys honors such as the Custom Street
Machine, Trendsetter of the Year and Street Rod of the Year
awards. The Studebaker also received the Best Street Cruiser
award at the Shades of the Past event in Pigeon Forge, Ten-
nessee, this past summer.
