; Going to Nashville. The Evans Network of Companies has
added the East Side Logistics service center in Nashville,
Tenn., to its transportation network. The East Side facility provides rail and ocean container drayage for rails and ports in
the Southeast.
; Thai-ing for first. PTT Retail Management, a division of the
Thai state-owned PTT Plc., has implemented RedPrairie’s
Performance Management solution to track performance
across all of the company’s retail outlets. The software will
help PTT monitor labor and inventory performance.
; Start your engines. Carquest Auto Parts has chosen
Transite Technology to supply core transportation management technologies and services. Carquest will use Transite’s
Quantum solution to reduce costs and streamline the management of its inbound and outbound shipments.
; Looking across the pond. Guy-Raymond Engineering Co.
has appointed Shepherd Caster Corp. as its exclusive North
American distributor. Guy-Raymond, based in King’s Lynn,
England, manufactures a full line of Euro-Style twin wheels
used on industrial equipment.
; iGPS shuffle. Intelligent Global Pooling Systems (iGPS)
has chosen Ryder System to provide it with reverse logistics
services. Under the multiyear contract, Ryder will handle pallet distribution, RFID tracking, and the reverse logistics/rede-ployment of up to 175 million pallets annually for iGPS’s customers in North America.
; Air flow. Viastore systems, an automated material handling
equipment provider, has designed and installed a foam panel
assembly line at Trane’s commercial air conditioner manufacturing plant in Lexington, Ky. As part of the project, viastore systems designed and manufactured 66 powered roller conveyor
zones, 38 of which are double decked to save floor space.
Viastore has also won a large-scale order from Retrotech
for its viaspeed storage and retrieval machines (SRMs). The
two companies teamed up to design an automated order
fulfillment system for meat processor Cargill’s new logistics
center in Schuyler, Neb., that includes 15 viaspeed SRMs and
a large load-handling device.
; Seeds of a partnership. Watermelon grower, packer, and
shipper Leger & Son has signed a new two-year agreement
with the pallet-pooling service provider CHEP. For almost 15
years, Leger & Son has been using CHEP pallets to transport
Leger brand watermelons from Georgia to retailers and distributors along the East Coast and west to Texas.
; X-telligent. LXE has announced a new partnership with
Intelli Track, a developer of inventory control and asset management software for small to medium-sized businesses.
Under the new arrangement, users will be able to run
IntelliTrack software on their LXE MX7 and MX8 handheld
computers.
; Jump into the pool. Peco Pallet, a pallet pooling company that serves customers in the food and consumer products
sectors, has announced several additions to its pooling program. The new participants are Kroger, Bozzuto’s, Weis
Markets, CVS, Dollar General, Brookshire Grocery, Unified
Grocers, Smart & Final, and Big Lots.
; Sea-worthy. The Montreal Port Authority has selected
Moffatt & Nichol, a Long Beach, Calif.-based engineering firm,
to prepare the development plan for a new terminal. Once
construction is completed, the new Hochelaga-Viau container terminal is expected to handle 510,000 TEUs annually.
; Power play. Enterprise software developer VAI has implemented its complete S2K Software Suite along with an IBM
Power Systems server for RefrigiWear Inc., a maker of insulated industrial outerwear. The deal includes VAI’s entire ERP
software suite, including S2K for distribution, manufacturing,
warehouse management, and customer relationship management. The new Power Systems server will allow
RefrigiWear to run its entire business on a single server.
; Built Ford tough. Ceva Logistics, a global supply chain
management company, has opened an inbound manufacturing support facility for Ford Motor Co.’s truck manufacturing plant in Louisville, Ky. As part of the arrangement, Ceva
will handle small lot replenishment, container management,
and just-in-time deliveries of inbound materials to the plant.
; United they stand. United Stationers Supply Co., a wholesale distributor of office products, has selected Ryder System
Inc. to provide dedicated contract carriage services. Ryder
will support United Stationers’ transportation operations by
providing vehicles, drivers, technology, and fleet management and vehicle maintenance services.
; Jammin’. Welch Foods has improved its warehouse and
inventory management operations with Take Supply Chain’s
Gemini Simplified Interface mobile software solution for
Oracle Process Manufacturing. By automating processes
across three production/warehousing locations, Gemini has
enhanced Welch’s operational control, inventory accuracy,
visibility, and order fulfillment operations.
