2009 International Conference & Expo as an event that will increase attendees’
“global ability.” As for what it means by that, the group defines “global ability” as
the capacity to compete in the global marketplace and make a company run more
effectively in an increasingly competitive economy.
The conference, which takes place in Toronto from Oct. 4–9, features six session tracks:
Lean; the global supply chain; basics of operations management; demand management,
forecasting, and sales and operations planning; professional advancement; and special-interest topics, which include green IT initiatives and pandemic preparedness. Attendees

How do you prove that you’re qualified for a new job or a promotion? A continuing education certification can provide outside verification that you know your stuff.
Houston-area residents can now take advantage of two certification programs—the Basic
Logistics Certificate and the International Logistics Certificate—offered by the Center for
Logistics and Transportation Policy and the College of Technology at the University of Houston.
The Basic Logistics Certificate program consists of 12 four-hour courses, beginning with
“Overview of Logistics.” It includes general business management courses like “Business Law”
and “Organizational Leadership” as well as courses focused on the different transportation
modes, including “Trucking,” “Rail Transportation,” and “Introduction to Ocean Transportation.”
The International Logistics Certificate program provides more advanced offerings, such as
“Risk Management,” “Global Sourcing,” and “Transportation Economics.” It also includes
courses on topics specific to importing and exporting like “C-TPAT,” “Import Procedures,”
“Export Procedures,” “Documentation,” and “International Insurance.” The international certificate program consists of six eight-hour courses and 14 four-hour courses.

If you think that Lean management is just for manufacturing operations, think
again. According to St. Louis University, the Lean management concept has much
to offer the logistics profession as well.
The school’s Lean Logistics Certificate program emphasizes ways in which the
Lean culture of reducing waste and increasing velocity and flow applies to logistics
operations. The course is designed to prepare participants to begin developing a
Lean logistics operational strategy, identify and eliminate waste in the logistics network, and develop a Lean logistics tool kit.
