Everyday scanning: Sick, a manufacturer of
sensors, safety systems, and automatic identification products for factory and logistics
automation, has introduced its IDM140 hand-held scanner. The IDM140 is a high-performance lightweight scanner that reads all common 1D bar codes. The manufacturer
describes the unit as an easy-to-use,
ergonomically designed scanner for everyday
use within the warehouse as well as in other logistics applications.
The IDM140 reliably reads poorly printed or damaged codes,
eliminating the need to manually input data. Plus, the IDM140
supports multiple interfaces, including USB, PS/2, and RS232 TTL,
within a single scanner. (Sick, www.sickusa.com)
The Appian Way: Appian Logistics Software unveils the latest
release of its Direct Route fleet routing system. This new version
was built from the ground up to take advantage of .NET architecture and XML interfacing, and to expand on the tools and features
built into the company’s flagship product.
Using .NET architecture, Appian was able to more tightly integrate all of the hundreds of additions made over the years and
provide new routing capabilities that weren’t possible with earlier
programming tools. The core Direct Route code was also reorganized to produce faster routing solutions. (Appian Logistics Software

Uplifting combination: R Materials Handling Inc. and Drivecon
Inc. have combined two of their products into a single package.
This combination incorporates the LoadMate Electric Chain Hoist
from R Materials Handling with the ergonomic PWRMicro Series
radio remote controls from Drivecon. The solution can maximize
productivity, ensure safety, and streamline operations. Equipped to
lift up to five tons, the LoadMate Electric Chain Hoist provides precision gearing, ease of operation, and easy mounting through a
compact design. The hoist body is constructed of durable pres-sure-cast aluminum for light weight and easy handling, epoxy-painted for corrosion resistance, and ribbed for better heat dissipation. The completely enclosed motor includes IP55 protection,
minimum class F insulation, and a Klixon type bimetal switch for
thermal protection. The chain guide ensures precise alignment,
reducing wear and prolonging chain life.
Drivecon’s compact and lightweight PWRMicro Series radio
remote controls are designed with a wide range of features to
increase workplace efficiency. The PWRMicro Series offers single or
dual speed, up to five motions, and a control range of up to 500
feet. The controls feature an emergency-stop button, removable
on/off/start key, programmable auto shut-down, and an optional
antenna extension for a control range of up to 1,500 feet. (R

Curves ahead: Caljan Rite-Hite, a manufacturer of solutions for
loading and unloading loose-loaded cargo, announces its new
Curve Track belt curve system. This new product is targeted to complex applications demanding continuous, high-speed operations
with limited space requirements.
Caljan’s Curve Track is designed to improve the material handling
capabilities for distribution centers, mail order houses, the parcel
industry, airport baggage handling systems, and more. The
CurveTrack belt curve is engineered with safety, efficiency, and reliability in mind. Precise belt movement is optimized with the
device’s unique belt guidance system. Belt change-over can be
accomplished quickly and efficiently with minimal tools, greatly
reducing costly downtime.
As part of the Caljan Rite-Hite SAFEtrack family of material handling
solutions, CurveTrack incorporates numerous standard safety features. In addition, the lightweight extruded aluminum profiles ensure
low noise levels while running. The profile design provides flexibility
and ease when mounting a variety of options such as side guards
and flow control sensors. (Caljan Rite-Hite, www.caljanritehiteus.com)
Good in tight spaces:
Designed for applications
where turns are tight and
aisles are narrow, Creform Corp.’s
Tite-Space BST AGV Tugger offers a
minimum turning radius of 400 mm
( 17. 5 inches). This new automatic guided
vehicle consists of a drive motor, 24-volt DC power
supply, and guidance sensors. It travels in a single direction along
a magnetic tape guidepath at speeds of 4 to 50 meters ( 13 to 164
feet) per minute.
The tugger is designed to glide under stationary pushcarts,
engaging the cart by extending a catch pin into the cart’s BST interface. The BST unit then conveys the cart to the required workstations or to load/unload points farther along the magnetic guidepath, and retracts the pin to disengage the cart. It is then free to
travel elsewhere and move additional carts.
The Tite-Space unit boasts a maximum towed weight of 1,320
pounds, depending on floor conditions and caster selection.

Transport transitioning: Transite Technology, a provider of logistics and shipping cost-management software and services, has
released Quantum, a powerful transportation management solution that directly cuts transportation costs by 20 percent and more.
Transite’s services include rate negotiations, carrier contract management, shipment rating, freight bill auditing, financial reporting,
and other spend reduction and best practices for less-than-truckload,
truckload, parcel, air, and ocean service. The company’s flagship
technology, My Freight Portal, a transportation management system
that is guaranteed to always identify the least-cost shipping choice,
and Transite’s other technologies are embedded in Transite’s
Quantum solution. (Transite Technology, www.transite.com)
Making their mark: Weber Marking Systems introduces a new
capability that adds high-quality, in-line digital imprinting to its high-speed flexographic label-printing and -production operation. Called
Jetrion, it’s an on-press inkjet system that uses UV ink to deliver
high-resolution image quality and reliability. It’s ideal for large- or
small-volume print runs that require variable-imprinting, like bar
codes (1D and 2D), text, sequential numbers, and expiration dates.
The flexible Jetrion system operates at up to 250 feet per
minute and provides over 9. 5 inches of potential print width. Print
resolution of up to 316x526 dpi is available, and every bar code is
verified prior to shipping. In addition, the Jetrion system is compatible with a wide range of Weber film and paper label substrates.
