Trade magazine editors tend to work behind the scenes. After all,
a good reporter is supposed to be an impartial observer and avoid
becoming part of the story. But every now and then, it’s nice to step
into the limelight and take a bow.
Last month, that moment came for four editors from Agile
Business Media’s DC VELOCITY and its sister magazine, CSCMP’s
Supply Chain Quarterly, when they were honored by the American
Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE) with regional
“Azbee” awards for editorial excellence.
Mark Solomon, DCV’s executive editor–news, won a silver medal
for his general interest feature article “Can we all just get along?,” a
look at the growing use of “collaborative robots”—or “cobots”—
that work alongside their human counterparts in the DC. Mitch
Mac Donald, group editorial director, and Karen Bachrach, executive editor–features, received a silver medal for DCV’s monthly
“Outbound” column. Toby Gooley, editor of Supply Chain Quarterly,
won a bronze medal for her “Perspectives” column.

Material handling equipment is known for being fast, sturdy, and
reliable. But we don’t always think of it as being groundbreaking or
innovative. An MHI awards program aims to change all that. Each
year, the trade group hands out Innovation Awards to companies
that come up with unique solutions to manufacturing and supply
chain challenges.
For the 2017 MHI Innovation Awards competition, a panel of
seven judges picked the winners from a field of 153 innovations submitted by exhibitors at the ProMat show. The winning entries were
chosen for their innovation in creating quantifiable and sustainable
results in terms of ROI (return on investment), cost savings, and
customer satisfaction. The following awards were handed out at the
event:
b The Best New Innovation
award went to Proship Inc. for its
CVP-500 Automated Packaging
System, a fit-to-size solution
that optimizes the fulfillment
process by creating a custom-fit package every seven seconds.
b The Best Innovation of an Existing Product honors went to
EuroSort Inc. for its Twin Push Tray Sorter, which effectively dou-
bles the available throughput of the existing EuroSort Single Push
Tray Sorter.
b The Best IT Innovation award went to Ubimax GmbH for its
“Enterprise Wearable Computing Suite,” which consists of four core
solutions: “xPick” for intralogistics, “xMake” for manufacturing and
quality assurance, “xInspect” for inspection and maintenance, and
“xAssist” for remote assistance.
And the winners are …
Forklift safety will be a hot topic in
Washington, D.C., again this spring. On
June 12 and 13, members of the Industrial
Truck Association (ITA) will take part in the
fourth annual National Forklift Safety Day.
The event provides an opportunity for the
industry to educate customers, policymak-ers, and government officials about the safe
use of forklifts and the importance of proper
operator training.
Washington-based ITA represents manufacturers of lift trucks, automated guided
vehicles (AGVs), and similar equipment in
the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The organization promotes international standards development, advances engineering and safety
practices, disseminates statistical information, and holds industry forums.
The main event will be held on June 13.
The morning program will feature speakers from both industry and government,
from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., at the Trump
International Hotel, 1100 Pennsylvania Ave.,
NW, Washington, D.C. In the afternoon,
ITA members will hold meetings with members of Congress representing their states
and home districts. Forklift manufacturers,
dealers, and distributors around the country
will also hold local events promoting forklift
safety that day.
ITA says it hopes National Forklift Safety
Day will provide greater awareness of safe
practices as well as encourage safer behavior
in warehouses, distribution centers, manufacturing plants, and other environments
where forklifts are in use.
