Asset-tracking drone:
Yard management system
developer Pinc Solutions created a stir earlier this year
when it announced its Pinc Air
supply chain drone, an autonomous aerial sensor platform that performs asset tracking. The drone is designed
to follow a preprogrammed flight path, capturing relevant inventory data both
inside and outside facilities.
Pinc Air uses GPS, RFID, and Light Detection And Ranging (LIDAR), a
remote-sensing technology that measures distance by illuminating a target
with a laser and analyzing the reflected light. It also works with ultrasonic and
optical sensors that are coupled with Pinc’s Real-Time Location System (RTLS)
algorithms to locate assets, capture information, and then upload that information for analysis.
Pinc Air is currently being beta-tested by a number of companies, including several manufacturers and logistics service providers. (Pinc Solutions,

Rugged enterprise tablet: Technology
provider Zebra says its ET50/55 Enterprise Tablet
is well suited for yard management applications. The device can be used as the onboard
computer on yard trucks or forklifts, or as
a manager dashboard, providing visibility to
assets in the yard.
While the ET50/55 looks like a consumer
tablet, it is rugged enough for use in rain,
snow, or dusty outdoor environments. It also
possesses exceptional battery power and provides enterprise-class rapid data capture, the
company says.
The tablet is available with either an 8.3-inch
or 10.1-inch display. Customers can choose
between the Android 5. 1 (Lollipop) or Windows
8. 1 operating system. The tablets have an Intel
quad-core tablet-optimized processor, which
can run even the most demanding applications
simultaneously, according to Zebra.
The display is made of Corning Gorilla Glass
3 with Native Damage Resistance, allowing it to
better survive the real-world events that commonly cause glass failure. In addition, a special
laminate process has been used to reduce the
space between the touchpanel and the display,
effectively reducing reflection and making the
screen easier to read.
The ET50/55 has an IP65 rating, indicating
that it has a dust-tight seal that can handle
a hose-down at full force. The tablet alone is
built to handle a drop from 3. 2 feet ( 1 meter).
Customers can also choose to add a rugged
frame, which can nearly double the device’s
drop specification.
The integrated 8MP rear camera is designed
for occasional capture of bar codes and images,
while the 2MP front camera is good for a video
call. Customers that want true enterprise-class
data capture can add optional advanced imaging engines to capture any 1-D or 2-D bar
codes—regardless of whether they are displayed on the screen of a mobile phone or
printed on paper. According to Zebra, the
images can be read even if they are damaged,
scratched, or poorly printed.
The device comes with an integrated user-re-movable battery. Customers can add an optional hot swappable battery for 24/7 power.
