Dimensioning technology: FreightSnap
3D, a 3-D technology that is capable of
being installed anywhere in a cross-dock,
terminal, or warehouse environment, performs accurate dimensioning of pallets in less
than five seconds per scan. FreightSnap 3-D
accomplishes this by utilizing sensor technology along with proprietary measurement
algorithms.
The technology consists of a 3-D camera
that can take a pallet’s dimensions in seconds.
The data are then transferred to the user’s
system and cataloged so that the information
can be shared with the company’s entire
network.
FreightSnap says its camera provides the
same capabilities as an expensive laser dimensioner. The 3-D system allows for full measurements of any load up to 104 inches
high, 96 inches wide, and 104 inches long.
All measurements are calculated to within
one-inch accuracy on each dimension. Freight
is measured, images are captured, and all
data are stored securely in FreightSnap’s
proprietary cloud-based system. All data can
be accessed through the global FreightSnap
Portal Application and are available within
one second of the pallet’s being scanned.

Handheld scanner: The Symbol CS4070
wireless handheld scanner provides mobile
workers who are using consumer-grade
devices with 1-D and 2-D bar-code scanning
capabilities. This Bluetooth scanner works
with all of today’s popular Android, iOS, and
Windows tablets, laptops, and smartphones.
According to Motorola Solutions, the pock-et-sized CS4070 scanner is one of the small-est and lightest devices in its class and is
ergonomically designed to be worn on a lanyard around the neck or fit in the hand. The
field-replaceable battery holds enough power
for a full 12-hour shift, and an LED indicator
lets workers know how much charge is left.
The CS4070 can scan bar codes that are
nearby or far away. It has omnidirectional
scanning capabilities, and can capture virtually any bar code, whether it is displayed on the
screen of a mobile phone or printed on paper.
Retailers, transportation and logistics, and
field service organizations can use the durable CS4070 companion scanner for mobile
point-of-sale (MPOS), merchandising, end-to-end track and trace, real-time ordering,
route accounting, inventory management,
and other applications. (Motorola Solutions

Rail service: UPS has added a full containerload (FCL) rail service to its China-to-Europe transportation lineup. The addition is the latest in a series of expansions to
UPS’s worldwide forwarding services.
UPS now offers the rail service from Chengdu, China, to Lodz, Poland, and from
Zhengzhou, China, to Hamburg, Germany. Combining the rail movement with a
truck network, UPS can provide service to customers throughout China and Europe.
The new rail service is up to 50 percent faster than ocean freight and up to 70 percent less costly than air freight, according to UPS. (UPS, ups.com)
