PPG WINS R&D 100 AWARDS
FOR TWO GREEN INNOVATIONS
PPG has earned two 2008 R&D 100
Awards for its Green Logic paint
detackifier and Zircobond pretreatment technology. The awards, bestowed
annually by R&D Magazine, recognize
the 100 most technologically significant
innovations each year.
Green Logic paint detackifier is
used by North American, European
and Japanese automakers to denature and remove over-sprayed paint
from the water wash system in automotive paint spray booths. The
patented formula, which incorporates
chitosan derived from crab, lobster
and shrimp shells, provides an environmentally responsible alternative
to detackifiers derived from nonrenewable, petroleum-based raw
materials or chemistries containing
residual-free formaldehyde. Green
Logic detackifier helps automakers
realize performance gains in paint
detackification and overall spray
booth operations, while offering
greater ease of operation and savings
from reduced maintenance, chemical
and wastewater treatment, and waste
disposal costs.
Zircobond pretreatment offers environmental and cost advantages over
traditional zinc-phosphate pretreatments without sacrificing product
performance. Compared with traditional products, Zircobond pretreatment reduces energy consumption,
reduces overall water consumption,
decreases sludge byproduct from the
pretreatment process and is formulated without zinc, nickel or manganese, thereby reducing wastewater
treatment costs.
COATINGS COMPANY TO
EXPAND IN NORTHEAST INDIANA
Nu-Tec Coatings, a provider of custom
dip, liquid and powder coatings to companies across the Midwest U.S., plans
to expand its production operations in
Indiana, creating 35 new jobs by 2011.
The three-year-old coatings company will invest more than $1.7 million
to add a pre-treat line, four paint
booths, drying and curing ovens and
an automated paint mixing and delivery system to its 145,000-square-foot
northeast Indiana facility. The company, whose services span from coating
parts for the automotive and recreational vehicles market to applying
special coatings to a myriad of parts
for the military, currently employs 127
at its Fort Wayne facility.
BASF COATINGS FORMS
STRATEGIC ALLIANCE WITH ATOTECH
BASF has formed a strategic alliance
with Atotech, a manufacturer of chemistry and equipment for general metal
finishing and printed circuit board
production.
Specifically, BASF will leverage
Atotech’s bio-chemical detackification
technology, chemicals in the water
curtain that treat overspray paint
during the painting process of automobile manufacture. Once these
detackification chemicals come in contact with paint overspray, it causes
the paint to coagulate.
The Atotech system is designed to
treat solvent and or waterborne paint
with little or no equipment modifications. This process reduces sludge,
stabilizes chemical oxygen demand
(COD) and water parameters,
requires less maintenance, reduces
equipment cleaning, improves water
conservation, and virtually eliminates
odors in the process.
ACS GETS GREEN LIGHT FOR 2010
Plans for the 2010 American Coatings
Show and Conference have been confirmed. Following its successful June
2008 premiere, the next event will
take place April 12-15, 2010 at the
Charlotte Convention Center in
Charlotte, NC. The combined event
will kickoff with the conference, which
will open its doors on Monday, April 12
and close on April 14. The show will
begin on Tuesday, April 13 and run
through April 15. The American trade
show for the paint and coatings industry is hosted by the National Paint &
Coatings Association (NPCA) and
Vincentz Network (VN), Hanover,
Germany; Nürnbergmesse North
America, Atlanta, GA, is the organizer of the show.
