PPG patents fluorescent colorants
Patent No. U.S. 7,338,704 B2
PPG Industries has obtained a
patent for a coating composition for
applying to a substrate comprised of
a resinous binder having dispersed
therein colorants and reflective pigments, wherein the colorants absorb
visible light at a first wavelength
band and produce fluorescent light
at a second wavelength band when
exposed to visible light, the coating
composition exhibiting a first
appearance on face dominated by
absorbance of light by the colorants
and a second appearance on flop
dominated by fluorescence of the colorants, wherein the concentration of
the colorants in the coating composition is approximately 0.001% weight
to 50% weight and wherein when the
colorant comprises colorant pigments, the size of the pigment is
selected so that the pigment particles will not scatter light effectively.
TIMSON PATENTS
PIGMENT COMPOSITE
Patent No. U.S. 7,341,780 B1
Timson Oy, Espoo, Finland has
obtained a patent for a particle granule consisting of plate-like pigment
particles and a binder having a surface layer, characterized in that the
surface layer of the granule consists of
a layer that has at least one layer of
pigment particles, which have mainly
settled with their plane surfaces in
the direction of the surface layer of the
granule, and the plane surfaces of the
pigment particles are substantially on
the same surface layer.
BASF PATENTS
AQUEOUS COATING
Patent No. U.S. 7,338,989 B2
BASF Coatings AG has been granted a patent for an aqueous coating
material comprised of a binder com-
prised of at least one epoxy resin and a
curing agent comprised of at least one
polyamine wherein at least one of the at
least one epoxy resin is present in a
powder coating material and is present
in fine dispersion in an aqueous dispersion comprising the at least one
polyamine.
COATING FOR INSPECTION
OF CRACKING IN STRUCTURE
Patent No. U.S. 7,341,777 B2
National Maritime Research
Institute has been granted a patent
for a coating for the inspection of a
crack in a structure wherein a first
coating layer having dispersed therein
microcapsules with a visualizing liquid sealed therein is formed on the
surface of the structure and when a
crack is developed in the structure
and propagated to the coating layer,
the microcapsules dispersed in the
coating layer are ruptured and the
visualizing liquid flows out from the
ruptured microcapsules and reaches
the surface of the coating layer along
the crack in the coating layer, making
it possible to detect the occurrence of
the crack in the structure, wherein at
least one second coating layer not containing the microcapsules is formed
over the first coating layer with the
microcapsules dispersed therein, and
the second coating layer being transparent and having an outermost layer
capable of elongating at least seventeen
times the amount of elongation of any
other coating layer in the structure.
MERCK PATENTS
SILVER PIGMENTS
Patent No. U.S. 7,344,590 B2
Merck Patent has been awarded a
patent for a silver pigment, consisting
of a transparent, platelet-shaped substrate, which is an SiO platelet,
2
Al O platelet, a polymer platelet, a
23
single crystal or a glass platelet, having a refractive index <1.9, and an
average thickness of individual
platelets within a standard deviation
of <20%, and on the substrate a coating of TiO and optionally an outer
2
protective layer, the pigment having a
silver interference color, whereby the
pigment exhibits color travel.
CLEARCOAT
PAINT COMPOSITION
Patent No. U.S. 7,342,071 B2
BASF Corporation has received a
patent for a coating composition comprised of a glycidyl ester of neode-canoic acid and a copolymerization
product of a monomer mixture comprised of one or more carbamate-func-tional monomers selected from the
group consisting of carbamate propyl
acrylate, carbamate propyl methacrylate, carbamate ethyl methacrylate,
and combinations thereof, and one or
more carboxylic acid-functional
monomers, wherein the mixture is
essentially free of hydroxyl monomers.
ASHLAND PATENTS
UV CURABLE LOW GLOSS ADDITIVE
Patent No. U.S. 7,338,986 B2
Ashland Licensing and Intellectual
Property LLC has received a patent
for a low gloss, UV curable overprint
varnish composition comprised of the
reaction product of a low gloss additive, comprised of a liquid Michael
addition resin, comprised of the reaction product of Michael donor and a
Michael acceptor, and a polyamide
polymer powder, and a reactive acrylate monomer, wherein the overprint
varnish composition has a lower gloss
value as determined by ASTM 523-89
at 60° than an overprint varnish composition without the combination of
the Michael addition resin and the
polyamide powder.
