U.S. 8,628,827 B2
Nof Metal Coatings Europe has been
granted a patent for a method for forming a coated metallic substrate having
an anticorrosion coating. The method is
comprised of obtaining a coating composition including from 0.3 percent to
24 percent by weight of at least one
agent selected from the group consisting
of organic titanate, organic zirconate
and mixtures thereof, from 10 percent
to 40 percent by weight of a particulate metal or a mixture of particulate
metals, at least 1 percent by weight of a
silane-based binder, and water, wherein
the sum of the organic titanate and/
or zirconate agent and of the silane-based binder is from 5 to 25 percent by
weight; forming a coating layer of the
coating composition on a metallic substrate; and subjecting the coating layer
to a baking operation at a temperature
greater than 180° C. and up to 350° C.
by supply of thermal energy to thereby
form the anticorrosion coating.
BASF Patents Aqueous
Coating
U.S. 8,629,207 B2
BASF has obtained a patent for a n aqueous coating formulation comprised of a
substituted, branched polyethyleneimine,
which is obtained by a process comprised
of reacting a branched polyethyleneimine
having a weight-average molecular weight
of from 500 to 10,000 g/mol with a carboxylic acid derivative of formula (I) R—
(C=O)X (I), wherein R is a C5 to C18
alkyl group or a C5 to C18 alkenyl group,
X is a halogen, a hydroxyl group, or a
group R—(C=O)—O—, a molar amount
of the carboxylic acid derivative in the
reacting is from 3 to 10 mol percent of a
molar amount of ethyleneimine employed
in preparing the branched polyethyleneimine, the reacting is comprised of formation and removal of a byproduct HX, and
the formulation is configured to coat a
substrate that is comprised of tannin.

Valspar Patents Can
Coatings
U.S. 8,617,663 B2
Valspar has obtained a patent for a method comprised of the steps of: (a) providing
a latex-based coating composition that
includes one or more polymers, wherein
the one or more polymers are formed
by polymerizing one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers, wherein the
ethylenically unsaturated monomers include (i) one or more oxirane functional
group-containing monomers, (ii) one or
more acid-functional monomers and (iii)
one or more additional ethylenically unsaturated monomers selected from butyl
(meth)acrylate or styrene, wherein the
one or more oxirane functional-group
containing monomers are polymerized
into the one or more polymers using an
emulsion polymerization, and wherein
the coating composition is not made using PVC compounds and is substantially
free of bound BPA and aromatic glycidyl
ether compounds; and (b) spray applying
the coating composition to an interior
surface of a food or beverage can or a
portion thereof.
Bioceramic Coating
U.S. 8,623,526 B2
Guizhou University has been awarded
a patent for a gradient bioceramic coating, wherein the gradient bioceramic
coating is prepared with powdery titanium, and powdery composite ceramics,
wherein the powdery composite ceramics is composed of powdery ceramics
obtained by mixing CaHPO4.2H2O
and CaCO3 and a rare earth oxide,
wherein the gradient bioceramic coating comprises a first gradient layer, a
second gradient layer and a third gradient layer and wherein the first gradient layer and the second gradient layer
are composed of powdery titanium and
powdery composite ceramics, and the
third gradient layer consists of
powdery composite ceramics.
NEI Corporation’s
NANOMYTE PT- 30 Self-
Healing Hybrid Coating
Receives U.S. Patent
NEI Corporation announced that the
USPTO has issued a notice of allowance
for its patent for a self-healing coating
technology. The allowed claims describe
an environmentally benign, conversion
coating formulation, specifically applicable to copper and copper alloys.
The inorganic-organic hybrid coating
(NANOMYTE PT- 30), which can be applied by dipping, spraying or flow coating, provides protection against corrosion
caused by dissolved salts and ammonia.
The development of NANOMYTE PT-
30 was aided in part by funding from the
EPA’s Small Business Innovation Research
(SBIR) program. NEI has developed similar coatings to mitigate corrosion of aluminum, magnesium, stainless steel and
galvanized steel. Patent applications for
these coatings are pending office action.
NANOMYTE coatings are versatile, and
can be modified to introduce color and
other features to meet performance and
aesthetic requirements. CW
