CHINACOAT will also include the following educational programs: CHINACOAT Conference: “Wood Coatings
– Broadening Sustainable Formulation Options,” Technical
Workshops on coatings and inks formulation and evaluation
of color ; New-Tech Corner and more than 30 sessions of
Technical Seminars.
CHINACOAT Conference
This year’s CHINACOAT Conference will be held November
16-17 at the Renaissance Shanghai Pudong Hotel. The theme
of this year’s conference is “Wood Coatings – Broadening
Sustainable Formulation Options.”
According to the conference organizers, wood is a versatile,
aesthetically attractive, a renewable material and conforms bet-
ter with the principle of “sustainable development” than the
synthetic alternatives. However, wood is intrinsically variable
and thus requires careful selection of appropriate coating sys-
tems to deliver long term performances, in both interior and
exterior situations.
The global wood coatings market will show a steady growth
depending on market dynamics, environmental legislation, customer demand for superior products and consumer consciousness on health & safety issues. The opening keynote paper on
the Global Market will identify and quantify coatings sector
where technology has the best opportunities for future penetration. The keynote paper on Flame Retardant Technology will
present a new halogen free patented system.
The Conference, featuring ten presenations, will be of value
to raw material suppliers, coatings manufacturers, as well as
specifiers and end-users of wood coatings.
Presentation of papers and post-presentation discussions will
be conducted in both English and Chinese (Putonghua).
The conference will commence with a keynote paper presented by Louis McCulloch of James Consulting, UK.
Many presentations from stakeholders in the industry
deal with the theme of coatings from technological or regulatory perspective. The focus of this paper will be to address
the subject from a market standpoint, aiming to identify and
quantify the coatings sectors where technology has the best opportunities for future penetration. Topics will include: Macro
Economic Environment, Current State of the industry, Global
Wood Coatings Market, Coatings suppliers, Emerging Trends,
Strategic Issues. Delegates will see the bigger picture (a) to identify growth opportunities and (b) to enrich analysis of the market and its players.
Papers to be delivered after the keynote presentation on
Monday include: “A Combination Coating of Rutile TiO2
Nano Structures and Sol-Gel Films to Enhance Weathering
Performance of Wood” presented by Dr. Mandla Tshabalala,
Forest Product Laboratory Wisconsin, USA and “Advanced
Fluoro/Silicone Hybrid Coating as Functional Surface” present by Patrick Zhao of Beijing Sino-Rich Materials Science,
P.R. China.
The second day of the conference will begin at 9:00 am
with a keynote paper , “Flame Retardant Technology: A
Critical Look” presented by Dr. Swaraj Paul of PPPolymer,
Sweden. The basic mechanism controlling the fire resistance
behavior of polymers will be first reviewed with emphasis
on the intumescent systems. Halogen based FR and their
environmental impacts will be critically assessed. Testing
methods to evaluate fire resistant properties and their implications will be described for various applications. Due to
the long-term persistence and toxicity of halogen based FR,
increasing pressure has been posed from regulatory authorities to develop halogen free FR systems and these new systems, including a new halogen free patented FR system, will
be presented.
The rest of the presentations include: “New Functional
Additives with Branched Structures” presented by Dr.
Michael Bessel, BYK-Chemie, Germany; “UV Curable
Waterborne Resins for Furniture and Cabinetry Coatings”
presented by Wenli Jin, Allnex Resins (HQ: Belgium);
“Isocyanate Free PU Coatings – Fundamental Chemistry
and Performance Attributes” presented by Yawei Xu, Dow
Chemical, USA; “Market Research Report on WB Wood
Coatings” presented by Ariel Jiang, WBCP, P.R China; “Click
Chemistry in Waterborne Polymers for Wood Coatings” presented by Jianqing He, South China University of Technology,
Guangzhou, China and The Pennsylvania State University,
USA; and “Sustainable Wood Finishing” presented by Nick
Barbounis, AkzoNobel, China.
Technical Workshops
To provide opportunities for training and learning for industry professionals, two Technical Workshops will be held concurrently with the main exhibition November 18-19. The
