YOU’VE GOT THE BASICS DOWN PAT. NOW YOU NEED TO MOVE ON TO
creating a coherent and effective supply chain strategy. There’s no need to panic.
The Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals is offering a new workshop called “Strategic Supply Chain Management: Concepts and Applications” that
will guide you through the process of designing a strategy that will help your company achieve its business objectives.
The course, which runs from Feb. 10–11 in Lombard, Ill., is led by instructors
Thomas Freese, principal of Freese & Associates, and Steve Geary, president of Supply
Chain Visions and editor at large for DC VELOCITY. They will discuss how different
elements of the supply chain interact and how to collaborate better with colleagues
outside the supply chain. Attendees will also learn how to explain the value of supply
chain management to executive leadership. For more information, visit cscmp.org.

Some corporations may still view logistics as a cost center, but discount retail chain Dollar
General isn’t one of them. In fact, CEO and Chairman Richard Dreiling believes the supply
chain plays a crucial role in retail operations at a time when customers, employees, investors,
and suppliers are coping with a sluggish economy. Dreiling will share his perspective at the
Retail Industry Leaders Association’s (RILA) 2010 Logistics Conference in Orlando, Fla.
The conference, which takes place Feb. 21–24, will also feature presentations by U.S. Trade
Representative Ambassador Ron Kirk and UPS Chairman and CEO Scott Davis. Kirk, who
serves as President Obama’s principal trade adviser, negotiator, and spokesman on trade
issues, will be making his first appearance before the retail community to discuss the state of
trade. Davis will address the current state of the economy as well as the demands and challenges that will shape the retail supply chain.
Other speakers include executives from major retailers like Wal-Mart, Target, Lowe’s, The
Home Depot, CVS, Best Buy, and H-E-B. For more information, visit www.rila.org.

Research shows that the savings from third-party logistics arrangements typically
fall off after the second or third year, as the relationship settles into a rut. How can
you break out of that rut and take the relationship to a higher level of value and
performance? The answer, in many cases, is performance-based outsourcing
(PBO), according to the ARC Advisory Group.
The consultancy will cover the basics of PBO at its Performance-Based Logistics
Outsourcing Seminar, which takes place Feb. 9–11 in Orlando, Fla. The session will
cover the reasons why 3PL-customer relationships fail to achieve their maximum
value potential and how performance-based outsourcing can help. Presenters will
outline how performance-based outsourcing (also known as vested outsourcing) is
different from other contracts and discuss how to set up this type of arrangement.
Executives from Whirlpool and Thermadyne Holdings will be on hand to discuss
how they successfully transformed their 3PL relationships with PBO.
The seminar runs concurrently with other programs at ARC’s World Industry
Forum. For more information, visit www.arcweb.com.
