Rack labeling: ID Label Inc. introduces Beam Renew,
a label solution for covering damaged and old bar-code labels on horizontal warehouse rack beams. A
unique feature of Beam Renew is custom color matching to any rack beam color. After application of Beam
Renew, racks look clean and new, the company says.
The Beam Renew labels are highly opaque with a
metalized backside to prevent old label information from showing through. The
aggressive permanent adhesive provides good holding for application over old
labels on metal racks. The labels are provided in roll form to facilitate application,
reducing installation time and labor. (ID Label Inc., www.idlabelinc.com)
Rail carbon calculator: CSX has introduced an improved Carbon Calculator
aimed at helping consumers and businesses better understand the key role freight
rail plays in a sustainable supply chain. CSX’s online Carbon Calculator not only
helps customers make smart supply chain decisions, but also helps educate consumers about the path items take to get to store shelves or their front door.
To demonstrate the efficiencies of CSX’s network, the calculator compares the
carbon emissions generated by freight rail with those of longhaul trucks over similar routes. Consumers are able to choose from a number of variables—from the
type and volume of goods transported to the length of the route—to estimate the
average carbon emissions reduced by shipping via rail.
The calculator also plays an important role for businesses, helping shippers to
better understand the environmental benefits of shipping their goods via rail. The
tool shows how intermodal shipments, combining both truck and rail transport to
maximize efficiency, can drastically reduce carbon emissions. CSX’s enhanced carbon calculator can be found on the CSX website, www.csx.com.
Far East-to-Europe ocean service: Six leading
container shipping lines have agreed to create
one of the largest vessel networks in the Far
East-to-Europe trade lane. The comprehensive
agreement will bring together members of The
New World and Grand alliances to create The
G6 Alliance. New World Alliance members are
APL, Hyundai Merchant Marine, and Mitsui
O.S.K Lines. Grand Alliance members are
Hapag-Lloyd AG, Nippon Yusen Kaisha, and
Orient Overseas Container Line.
The new partnership will create one of the
leading networks in the Far East-to-Europe and
Far East-to-Mediterranean container shipping
markets, with more than 90 ships in nine services calling at more than 40 ports in Asia,
Europe, and the Mediterranean.
The new alliance is scheduled to begin operation by April 2012 with seven joint services
operating between Asia and Europe and two
services to the Mediterranean. Member carriers
said the new alliance would be characterized by
fast transit times, broad port coverage, and the
latest vessels, with capacities of up to 14,000
TEUs. (APL, www.apl.com)
Longer Lasting Belts
We use 100% virgin urethane (no regrind waste). Makes stronger, longer lasting belts.
Gravity chutes: Tiffin Metal Products Co. has
added the SST Gravity Chute to its line of material handling equipment. This gravity chute is an
alternative to standard steel and fiberglass chutes.
The new product incorporates both functionality and configurability by offering a chute design
that has almost no restrictions on width, side
guard height, and pitch. The chutes can be engineered to accommodate specific package sizes
and weights. In addition, multiple types of UHMW
material are available to control flow speed.
Among other features, the SST Gravity Chute
eliminates the need to lubricate or wax
chutes—no more “pole people” are required
on humid days. (Tiffin Metal Products Co.,

Plastic pallets: Cabka, a supplier of one-way
and reusable plastic pallets, now offers heavy-duty pallets made of Cabkan, a reinforced plastic material developed by the company. The
new Cabkan material offers the stiffness and
impact strength required for pallet applications.
These new pallets display extreme load bearing
capacity, even in high racks, and reliable stiffness at ambient temperatures up to 104° F. Up
to now, these quality features could normally
be achieved only with metal reinforcements.
Molded in one piece, Cabkan pallets are
completely recyclable. In addition, Cabka promises to take these pallets back if they are damaged or at the end of the product cycle.
