Fast, accurate order fulfillment
The faster and more accurately a facility processes customer orders, the
higher customer satisfaction will be. This makes order picking one of
the most controlled logistics processes and one which greatly impacts
overall supply chain productivity. Vanderlande offers a full range of picking
solutions, including goods-to-person, zone, batch, as well as automated
case, tote and pallet picking systems to meet the demands and challenges
of any fulfillment operation.

Route optimization: LLamasoft, a developer
of supply chain design software solutions,
has improved the technology and usability of
its Transportation Guru transportation network design software. Transportation Guru
enables users to integrate supply chain network design and transportation routing.
The software’s new capabilities include
fleet optimization, continuous moves optimization, and periodic shipment balancing
and scheduling. The fleet optimization capability helps users determine the best size for
their particular fleet while also creating the
most-efficient multistop vehicle routes. By
considering asset costs and location as part of
the objective function, this algorithm creates
multistop routes with the right fleet mix.
The continuous moves optimization capability enables designers to plan interleaved
pickups and dropoffs within cohesive routes.
The solution also offers mode selection technology, which will identify if a shipment
should be fulfilled via a multistop route or
via a direct shipment (such as through a
less-than-truckload shipment or parcel). If
the shipment will be fulfilled via multistop
routing, the algorithm will determine which
asset it should ship with. This reduces overall
transportation system costs by rightsizing the
fleet and determining optimal interleaved
multistop routes while considering direct
shipment costs.
The periodic shipment balancing and
scheduling capability creates routes using
daily shipment data to balance and schedule
deliveries/pickups across a given time period.
This enables planners to determine a schedule
for multistop vehicle routes. (LLamasoft Inc.,

Utility vehicle: The new Cushman 1600XD4
4X4 utility vehicle comes standard with two
rows of bench seating and can seat four crew
members comfortably.
The vehicle has a 1,325-pound payload
capacity and can tow up to 1,300 pounds.
The 1600XD4 combines four-wheel-drive
capability with a 22 horsepower, 1,007cc
three-cylinder OHV diesel engine. Its performance is further enhanced by an automatic, continuously variable transmission (CVT)
with low- and high-gear ratios; a user-se-lectable locking rear differential, which can
be engaged in both two-wheel-drive and
four-wheel-drive operations; and four-wheel
independent suspension.

Geolocation apps: Mobile technology startup CrossFleet has introduced two new
geolocation apps for the logistics and transportation industry. The “locate” app is
designed to connect shippers and carriers with real-time status and location updates
on shipments via GPS from the truck drivers’ smartphones. The “workCITE” app
allows contractors to communicate with field service technicians on the job site to
schedule, report, and track projects. With this app, contractors can track in real
time where and when their technicians are at a job site, and how long it takes to
complete a job. (CrossFleet, crossfleet.com)
