Human-machine interface touchscreen:
Idec Corp. has released its new HG5G-V
15-inch human-machine interface (HMI)
touchscreen, which offers a larger display
screen so applications can readily show
extensive process information with improved
esthetics and visibility.
The screen features a resolution of 1024
by 768 pixels and a brightness of 650 cd/m2
to deliver greater visibility, even in high-glare
locations such as direct sunlight. It has a back-light life rating of 100,000 hours minimum.
To bolster communications capabilities, the
company added BACnet/IP, which is suitable
for a wide range of building automation and
HVAC applications. The screen’s file transfer
protocol (FTP) functionality allows users to
configure the HMI as an FTP client or server
for transferring programs—and for copying
or moving files between local memory, an
external memory device, or a cloud-based file,
database, or data storage platform.
Web server functionality for HMI remote
monitoring and control is accessed using any
device capable of hosting a Web browser,
including a smartphone, tablet, or laptop.
Accessing the HMI using this method gives
users the same functionality as if they were
standing in front of the HMI on the factory
floor. Troubleshooting and maintenance of
a system is possible any time and from anywhere, saving travel time and expense.
The HMI supports Industrial Internet of
Things (IIoT) operation by serving up Web
pages developed using a browser-based Web
page editor. (Idec Corp., hmi.idec.com)

Aerodynamic truck wings: Truck Wings is an active-aerodynamic device from the
design and engineering company XStream Trucking that automatically closes the
tractor-trailer gap on commercial trucks when the vehicle hits a certain speed. The
company estimates that the device creates fuel savings of 4 to 6 percent.
Truck Wings technology has been tested in wind tunnels, on tracks, and in real-world over-the-road conditions. The greatest fuel savings were recorded in over-the-road tests where real-world crosswinds were taken into account, the company
says. (XStream Trucking, www.xstreamtrucking.com)
