Handheld bar-code reader:
Cognex Corp., a supplier of
machine vision systems, has
released its fastest and most
economical industrial handheld reader, the DataMan
8050 Series. Designed with a
ruggedized housing to withstand harsh conditions and equipped with
Cognex’s bar-code reading algorithms, the
DataMan 8050 Series can read even challenging bar codes quickly and easily, according to
the manufacturer.
The DataMan 8050 and 8050X utilize
Cognex’s 1DMax+ with Hotbars algorithms
to provide high-speed reading performance
even with damaged, low-contrast, or direct
ink-jet bar codes. Its two-dimensional (2-D)
algorithms allow the 8050 to rapidly decode
a variety of 2-D symbologies, including
DataMatrix, QR, PDF417, and Aztec codes.
The DataMan 8050 Series is available with
both corded and wireless communication
modules. It supports industry-standard communications, including USB, USB keyboard,
RS-232, and Bluetooth wireless communication to a base station. (Cognex Corp., www.

Forklift battery: Battery manufacturer
EnerSys has expanded its NexSys product line
to include the NexSys 558-AH battery. The
new battery measures 30. 35 inches in height,
12.77 inches in width, and 25. 35 inches in
length. It will fit many 24-volt Class III lift
trucks.
The battery consists of six NexSys 12-volt
186-AH “blocs” connected in series/parallel
to achieve 24 volts and 558 amp hours.
This setup allows the battery to charge at
rates between 32 and 70 percent of the
battery’s capacity for fast and flexible opportunity charging. This enables the battery to be
charged rapidly during shift breaks, which can
extend the battery’s run time. Because the
battery can be charged at such high rates, it
requires the use of EnerSys EnForcer chargers,
which have higher efficiency ratings than
many conventional chargers.
According to EnerSys, the battery is virtually maintenance-free and does not require
watering. The NexSys 558-AH battery also
withstands shock and vibration while providing eco-friendly performance, the manufacturer says.
NexSys batteries typically occupy up to 30
percent less space than equivalent conventional lead acid batteries. The NexSys batteries
have a shelf life of up to two years. (EnerSys,

Tote for AS/RS systems: Akro-Mils has introduced a new tote aimed at increasing
space in automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS). The Multi-Load Tote can
be reconfigured as users’ storage needs change. It can be used as a standalone tote
or with removable bin cups and dividers to create individual compartments within
the tote. A patent-pending sidewall clip allows the cups and dividers to securely
attach to the tote. Individual cups can then be removed from the tote for individual
handling at picking or packing stations.
The new tote has a reinforced flat bottom, ribbed sidewalls, and a reinforced rim
to improve both durability and service life. (Akro-Mils, www.akro-mils.com/)
