Fast-drying clearcoat refinish coating
Patent No. U.S. 7,446,149 B2
BASF Corp. has received a patent for
a refinish composition comprised of (a)
a hydroxyl-functional acrylic polymer,
wherein the acrylic polymer has a number average molecular weight of at least
about 5,000 and is polymerized using at
least 45% by weight of a cycloaliphatic
monomer, based on the total weight of
monomers polymerized, (b) at least one
film-forming polymer different from the
acrylic polymer of (a) comprised of a second hydroxyl-functional acrylic polymer, and (c) optionally, at least one curing agent for the acrylic polymer of (a)
and/or the film-forming polymer of (b),
wherein the acrylic polymer of (a) is
from 5% to about 60% by weight of the
combined weight of the acrylic polymer
of (a) and the film-forming polymer or
polymers of (b) and further wherein the
refinish composition is a refinish
clearcoat composition.
PPG PATENTS ALKYD-BASED
FREE RADICAL WOOD COATING
Patent No. U.S. 7,387,843 B2
PPG Industries has received a patent
for a coating composition comprised of a
polymer that can be cured by free radical initiation and comprised of an alkyd
portion and a free radical curable portion comprising polymerizable ethyleni-cally unsaturated groups derived from
an electron rich compound; a free radical
or cationic initiator; and 60 to 80 weight
percent, based on the total weight of the
composition, of a organic solvent.
BASF PATENTS POWDER COATINGS
Patent No. U.S. 7,449,516
BASF Coatings has obtained a
patent for a process for preparing a
powder coating material comprised of
mixing at least two liquid components
in a static mixer to give a molecularly
disperse and/or finely dispersed liquid
mixture, emulsifying the liquid mixture
in an aqueous medium in a dispersing
unit to give an aqueous emulsion of liquid particles, and one of cooling the
emulsion so that a suspension of dimensionally stable particles is formed, and
isolating the dimensionally stable particles from the suspension, or isolating
dimensionally stable particles directly
from the emulsion.
DEFT PATENTS CORROSION
RESISTANT CONVERSION COATINGS
Patent No. U.S. 7,452,427 B2
Deft, Inc. has received a patent for a
composition for coating a metal substrate comprised of an aqueous carrier;
an oxidizing agent; and first and second
salts. The first salt is comprised of a
rare earth element nitrate, and the second salt is comprised of a rare earth element halide, and the first and second
salts in combination are present in the
composition in an amount effective to
form a corrosion resistant coating on
the metal substrate.
ELIOKEM PATENTS POLYMER BINDER
FOR INTUMESCENT COATINGS
Patent No. U.S. 7,417,091 B2
Eliokem has been granted a patent
for a method of manufacturing an intumescent coating comprised of the step of
dissolving a Newtonian and a reticulated copolymer in a solvent, wherein the
Newtonian copolymer is comprised of p-methylstyrene repeat units and 2-ethyl-
hexylacrylate repeat units, wherein the
reticulated copolymer is comprised of p-methylstyrene repeat units and 2-ethyl-
hexylacrylate repeat units, and wherein
the solvent is selected from the group
consisting of organic solvents and water,
and homogenizing the mixture in the
solvent, wherein an anti-settling agent
and at least one additive selected from
the group consisting of conventional
reactive pigments systems, dispersants,
plasticizers, defoamers, thickeners, chlo-
rinated paraffin solvents, waxes, fillers,
and fibers is added to the solvent during
the homogenizing step.
HENKEL PATENTS METHOD FOR
COATING METAL SUBSTRATES
Patent No. U.S. 7,452,428 B2
Henkel KGaA has received a patent
for a method for coating a metal surface with a coating agent comprised of
optionally cleaning and/or degreasing a
metal surface, applying an aqueous
chromate-free conversion coating agent
producing an uncrosslinked conversion
layer, applying a coating agent based
on binders crosslinkable by radical
polymerization to the uncrosslinked
conversion layer, and crosslinking the
uncrossedlinked conversion layer
together with the coating agent to form
a crosslinked coating by radical poly-merization,wherein the conversion
layer comprises, in an amount of from
0.1 to 500 mg/m2 of surface, low molecular weight compounds which contain
groups crosslinkable by radical polymerization and H-active groups.
CIBA PATENTS SILICON OXIDE
INTERFERENCE PIGMENTS
Patent No. U.S. 7,452,597 B2
Ciba Specialty Chemicals Corp. has
obtained a patent for a pigment comprised of (a) optionally a layer consisting of a metal, (b) at least one layer,
which is located between the layers (a)
and (c), if a layer (a) is present, and
consists of the metal, silicon (Si) and
oxygen (O), obtained by calcination of
plane-parallel structures (flakes) comprising at least one layer consisting of
a metal and at least one layer consisting of SiO2 with 0.70≤z≤2.0, in a nonoxidizing atmosphere and (c) optionally a layer consisting of SiO2 on layer
(b), wherein 0.70≤z≤2.0, wherein the
metal of layer a, when present, is the
metal of layer b. CW
