Holliday Pigments invests in facilities
Holliday Pigments has invested €2M
in an effluent treatment plant (ETP)
at its main manufacturing site in
Comines, Northern France. Following
the € 7.5M implementation of a flue
gas desulphurization (FGD) plant in
2004, the site is now the world’s
largest ultramarine manufacturing
plant complying with all European
environmental laws. This latest initiative further supports its goal to
achieve ISO 14001 Environmental
Management Standard certification by
year-end 2010 and has been funded, in
part, by the European Environment
Agency (EEA) in Artois-Picardie. The
European Union body has pledged a
10 year loan of €1.19M and converted
€225,000 of this amount into a grant
as part of an ongoing technical and
financial partnership. Additional funding was provided by Holliday
Pigments’ parent company, Rockwood
Pigments.
INDUSTRY MOURNS HOWARD GREENWALD
Howard Greenwald, who helped Lansco Colors become a major pigment distributor, died August 9, 2009. Greenwald began his career supplying pigments,
fillers, and additives to the paint, plastics and ink industry in 1952 as sales
manager of Smith Chemical and Color Co. in Brooklyn, NY. He left Smith in
1965, and became an independent sales representative until partnering with
Werner Klugman in 1975 to purchase Landers-Segal Color Co, Inc., (Lansco
Colors), a NY/NJ distributor of pigments. Over the next five years, he was
joined by his two sons, David and Donald, and Klugman’s daughter Deborah.
From 1975 to 2000 he guided the company into national prominence, growing revenues 50 times. In 1991, he acquired Smith Chemical and, subsequently, numerous other pigment distributors. Today, Lansco Colors is a major
distributor of organic and inorganic pigments to the coatings, ink and plastics
industries in the U.S. Greenwald was also a member of the Federation of
Societies for Coatings Technology’s (FSCT) New York Chapter.
LANXESS EARNS EPA
REGISTRATION FOR NEW BRONOPOL
Lanxess Corp.’s material protection
products business unit received EPA
registration for a new Bronopol-based
biocide formulation. The biocide is a
VOC-free synergistic blend of Bronopol
(2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol) and
smaller percentages of CMIT/MIT (5-
chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one/ 2-
methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one). Lanxess is
marketing this formulation under the
Preventol P 91 brand name. The group
also sells Preventol P 100 preservative
(100% Bronopol) and Preventol P 30
(VOC-free 30% Bronopol solution).
help formulators of coatings, adhesives,
sealants and construction products
find the raw materiels they need.
“Products that carry the EnVia
brand must pass a rigorous certification program to ensure they are suitable for use in sustainable formulations,” said Eric Kaiser, latex marketing director. “Customers can then focus
on selecting products with the perform-
ance and processing benefits they need
and have confidence that the product
will comply with the latest environmental standards.”
In order to qualify, products must
help companies reduce air pollution
emissions, meet VOC regulatory targets, minimize environmental impact
and enable formulation of high-performance finished products. CW
