Union Process Manufactures Attritor For
Green Manufacturing Initiative
Union Process, Inc. has manufactured
a large production S-400 Attritor for a
unique green manufacturing initiative.
By working closely with Union
Process, a special large Attritor was designed that allows the customer to wet-grind waste material in the Attritor so
that it can be recycled and used in producing new product in their manufacturing process.
This particular process also required
that the Attritor operate at elevated temperatures. To accomplish this, Union
Process built a special abrasion-resistant
steel tank featuring external clamp-on
heating plates ASME-rated for 150 PSI at
400º F. The approximate working capacity of the S-400 is 300 gallons of slurry.
The large tank of the S-400 accommodates 12,000 lbs. of through-hardened
carbon steel grinding media.
Ross Offers New Planetary
Disperser and Discharge
System Turnkey Package
Ross has introduced a new Planetary
Disperser and Discharge System Turnkey
Package designed for high-viscosi-ty, multi-stage mixing requirements.
The Ross PowerMix (U.S. Patent No.
4,697,929) consists of a stirrer blade and
a saw-tooth disperser, both of which rotate on their respective axes at different
speeds while orbiting the mix vessel. The
high-speed disperser quickly incorporates
powders, fibers, pellets and other solids
into a liquid batch while the planetary
blade continuously sweeps the vessel
walls and bottom. The stirrer also functions to help move viscous material toward the saw-tooth blade and ensure
uniform heat distribution. Because each
agitator is independently controlled, flow
patterns and shear rates can be fine-tuned
at any point during the mixing cycle.
Used in conjunction with a Ross
Discharge System, the PowerMix is capable of high-throughput production of
viscous dispersions up to 2 million centipoise. This turnkey solution is utilized
in a wide range of applications including
adhesives, sealants, molding and potting compounds, fiber-filled composites,
plastisols, elastomers, conductive inks,
specialty coatings, thermal greases, lubricants and ceramic dispersions.
Lubrizol Launches Turboset
2027 PUD to Enhance the
Performance of Wood
Coatings
The Lubrizol Corporation has introduced Turboset 2027, an NMP-free,
self-crosslinking polyurethane composite dispersion formulated to enhance the
performance of interior wood coatings
used on floors and furniture, as well as
select sealers, without requiring additional crosslinkers.
Turboset 2027 has been designed to
elevate wood coating performance in
the key areas of durability and wear resistance. While similar to its forerunner,
Turboset 2025, Turboset 2027 is distinguished by its unique NMP-, NEP- and
APEO-free chemistry making it an ideal
solution for coatings intended for the
global market and when health or environmental matters are considerations.
According to the company, Turboset 2027
is a high-solids polymer, 40% by weight,
and can be paired with a wide variety of
cosolvents for greater opportunities to
develop formulations for the world’s diverse markets.
Turboset 2027 offers impressive performance qualities with exceptional durability and resistance to chemicals and
overall wear, according to the company.
Test results for black heel mark protection and hardness have also been on a
very high level. In addition, gloss retention was comparable to high-VOC dispersions containing NMP. Crosslinking
with a polyisocyanate, while not required, can be used to provide further
improvement of performance regarding
black heel mark, chemical and scratch resistance. The film cure speed of Turboset
2027 is also a significant benefit.
Shepherd Color Introduces
NTP Yellow 10C151
Inorganic Pigment for
Paints and Coatings
The Shepherd Color Company announced the development of a new pigment chemistry offering durability, high
opacity and a bright clean yellow color.
Niobium Tin Pyrochlore (NTP) Yellow
is an innovative inorganic pigment that
expands the envelope of durable color,
according to the company. It is a bridge
between the high-chromaticity of organic
pigments with the durability and opacity
of inorganic pigments.
The NTP Yellow is a new class of
Complex Inorganic Colored Pigment
(CICP) under the designation Pigment
Yellow 227 and is covered by a number
of patents around the world. The NTP
Yellow 10P150 is specifically engineered
for plastics applications while the NTP
Yellow 10C151 is tailored for coatings
and paints. The new pigment is gaining
new regulatory approvals and chemical
inventory listings almost daily.
To complement the NTP Yellow, Shepherd
Color is also introducing an improvement of a current product line with brand
new offerings in its Rutile Tin Zinc (RTZ)
Orange pigments. CW
