PPG Aerospace
Supplying Production
and Spare Windows
for Embraer KC-390
PPG Industries’ aerospace transparencies group is designing windshields for
the KC-390 military transport aircraft
that will be the largest glass windshields
PPG has produced and the industry’s
first to have a compound bent shape affording ballistics resistance and night-vision capabilities.
PPG is under contract with Embraer
Defense and Security to design and
manufacture production and spare windshields, side cockpit windows and fuselage windows for the KC-390 aircraft.
According to Connie Poulsen, PPG
global director for military transparencies, the windshields will be about 11
square feet to provide pilots with expansive viewing. The No. 2 and No. 3 side
cockpit windows also will be glass and
meet requirements for ballistics resistance
and night-vision compatibility.
“PPG has a history of delivering
complex technical solutions on time to
Embraer, and that history was instru-
mental in Embraer’s decision-making
process for the KC-390,” Poulsen said.
“Our technical design capabilities and
glass-bending expertise are critical to
achieving the vision Embraer has for the
KC-390 aircraft.”
PPG is designing and will produce the
heated glass windshields and side cockpit
windows at its Huntsville, Alabama, fa-
cility, while the fuselage windows are be-
ing designed of stretched acrylic and will
be manufactured at its Sylmar, California,
location. PPG has delivered first articles.
Embraer expects the aircraft to enter
service in 2016.
In addition to the KC-390, PPG produces transparencies for nearly every
Embraer aircraft in production today,
such as the 314 ALX Super Tucano,
ERJ 135/145, EMB 170/190, Phenom
100/300, Embraer Legacy 450 and
Lineage 1000 aircraft.
PPG Aerospace is the aerospace
products and services business of
PPG Industries. PPG Aerospace –
Transparencies is the world’s largest supplier of aircraft windshields,
windows and canopies. PPG Aerospace
– PRC-DeSoto is the leading global
producer and distributor of aerospace

Environmental
Responsibility Case Studies
Exhibition Held at Axalta
LEED Certified Asia Pacific
Headquarters
Axalta Coating Systems together with
ECO-NOMY, the first magazine in
mainland China devoted to the sustainable economy, is holding an environmental conservation exhibition entitled
“The Eco-Journey of 500 Paper Boxes.”
Axalta’s sustainable practices in creating a greener office space and its more
sustainable automotive coating solutions are recognized by ECO-NOMY as
a part of the eco-responsible case studies in the exhibition.
The exhibition is being held in the lobby of Axalta’s Shanghai office building.
The aim of the exhibition is to encourage
the public to learn about environmentally
responsible solutions through best practices and displays.
“We are very pleased that Axalta’s
new offices have been selected by the
exhibition and presented together with
other best practices in our building,”
said Luke Lu, Axalta vice president
and president of China. “It is meaning-
ful that the collective commitment to
sustainability which is demonstrated
by the exhibition will reach and in-
spire more people as the exhibition
tour moves on.”
In July, 2014, Axalta Shanghai Office
received the LEED (Leadership in Energy
and Environmental Design) gold certifi-
cation under the LEED for Commercial
Interiors Rating System from the U.S.
Green Building Council.
Another Axalta environmental responsibility case study selected to be part
of the exhibition is its automotive coating solutions. The company’s high solid
solventborne systems and waterborne
coating systems, have been developed to
reduce VOC emission, improve productivity for customers and achieve durable
coating results.
The Eco-journey of 500 Paper Boxes”
was first exhibited in January 2014, and
so far it has toured to different public
spaces such as the Shanghai Library,
Shanghai World Financial Center,
Tongji University, the Development
Bank of Singapore and Zhangjiang
High-Tech Park.
ACA Video Highlights
Added-Value and
Sustainable Nature of
Coatings
The American Coatings Association
(ACA) has released a video, entitled “Coatings Protect, Preserve,
Provide.”The video highlights the
value that coatings add to a vast array
of man-made objects, and shows how
coatings contribute to sustainability
by protecting and preserving the useful life of the things to which they are
applied. In addition to demonstrating
the vital and intrinsically sustainable
role coatings play, the video underscores just how pervasive coatings are
in our society.
The video is part of ACA’s
Communications Outreach Program,
which is intended to educate audi-
ences about the coatings industry. The
Sustainability Series focuses on the
purpose of coatings and the benefits
they provide. In addition to the video,
ACA has a dedicated webpage and bro-
chure that feature extensive examples
of exactly how “Coatings Protect,
Preserve, Provide.”
ACA’s goal is to demonstrate the tan-
gible value of coatings, by presenting
real-life and measurable instances where
coatings applications protect structures,
preserve objects, and provide more sus-
tainable possibilities.
