BRUSH WELLMAN
LICENSES COATING TECHNOLOGY
Brush Wellman Inc. has entered into a
licensing agreement with Mafco Inc. of
Largo, FL, to acquire corrosion protection coating technology as applied to
beryllium materials.
The technology will be utilized on
select beryllium metal and aluminum
beryllium composite products manufactured by Brush Wellman’s
Beryllium Products unit. The acquired
Mafco technology includes anodization
and chemical film coating.
Protective and low emissivity coatings are often desirable for optical,
structural and electronic applications
for beryllium metal and aluminum
beryllium composite products. These
coatings provide a barrier to oxidation
which enhances performance, reliability and useful life.
come from the decorative sector, as the
industrial segments vary in their performance between contraction, stagnation and expansion. The marine, coil
and plastic finishing segments will be
key areas for the future.
Although decorative paints still
account for about 67-68% of the
French paint market, the split
between professional and DIY use has
narrowed in recent years due to a revolution in the French DIY sector.
Many changes have taken place here,
notleastof which is a sea
change in how the French perceive
DIY. Many more have taken to viewing it as a hobby rather than undertaking it for purely economic reasons.
The female market has also been
cultivated more fully, while the more
senior part of the population has also
been targeted, because of their rela-
tively high standard of living.
Future drivers in the French decorative sector include tax incentives
and renovations which will make
buildings more energy-efficient.
The industrial coatings market in
France is likely to witness a significant
divergence in performance. For example,
the refinish and general industrial segments are likely to continue shrinking
while the automotive and wood finishing sectors will struggle to grow, as the
spectre of Eastern European manufacturing continues to haunt the industry.
Strong growth prospects are likely to
reveal themselves in the packaging,
marine and UV-curing sectors, echoing
themes of personalization, leisure and
the environment which ring true of decorative sector growth.

IRL’S PROFILE OF THE
FRENCH PAINT INDUSTRY
Information Research (IRL) has publication its report on the French paint and
coatings sector titled, “A Profile of the
French Paint Industry, 2nd Edition.”
France is Western Europe’s fourth-largest paint market, estimated at
916,000 tons in 2007, according to
IRL’s new study. This places France in
a position where it is poised to become
yet another million-ton-plus market in
Western Europe by 2011, and by 2012
could reach a total of nearly 1,025,000
tons. Almost all of the growth will
FUTURECOAT! REGISTRATION NOW OPEN;
JOHN MIKAN TO PRESENT KEYNOTE ADDRESS
Registration is now open for FSCT’s FutureCoat! 2008. To be held October
14–16, 2008, at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place in Chicago, IL, the
program will feature technical presentations, networking opportunities
with tabletop displays, and student poster sessions highlighting new
directions in coatings. In addition, a newly created student professional
development program will help students transition from college life to a
career in the coatings industry.
Geared to the theme, “Globally Responsible Coatings—Getting There
from Here,” FutureCoat! 2008 will explore the innovative methodologies
and applications facing the coatings industry. The conference program has
been developed by the FutureCoat! 2008
planning committee, headed by Li-Piin
Sung of the National Institute of
Standards and Technology.
One of the program highlights will be
the keynote address by John Mikan, president of Experien Health Sciences, Inc.
Mikan’s presentation will explore the
question, “Is the Coatings Industry
Heading Towards Increased Chemical
Regulation Here in the U.S. in the Wake of
EU’s REACH Regulation?”
