Fresh Paint
Asia-Pacific is the only region forecast to have positive
growth in 2009. Most countries in Asia-Pacific will show
declines in consumption over 2008; China and India will
contribute modest growth. Europe and North America
are each forecast to have volume declines of six to seven
percent in 2009. In addition to challenging end use markets, new regulations (e.g.: EU Decopaint Directive) are
lowering VOCs in these regions and putting pressure on
coating formulators. Motor vehicle production has also
plummeted which has fostered a large decline in their
coatings. Europe and North America each consume
approximately 22-23% of the global coating volume.
World architectural paint consumption in 2009 is forecast at 34 billion pounds, down three percent from 2008.
OEM coating consumption in 2009 is projected to come in
at 16. 5 billion pounds, off eight percent from 2008.
Special purpose coating consumption in 2009 is expected
to be nearly the same as the prior year.

PPG, AMERICAN HONDA
FORM STRATEGIC ALLIANCE
PPG’s automotive refinish business has formed an alliance
with American Honda and its new Body Shop Recognition
Program. American Honda has approved the credentials of
the CertifiedFirst Network and MVP Business Solutions
programs of PPG as qualifying refinish supplier performance programs. American Honda will recognize dealer-owned and independent body shops in the U.S. that participate in the CertifiedFirst Network and MVP programs,
adopt its OEConnection’s CollisionLink software program
and conduct a minimum number of transactions through the
CollisionLink system.
A collision shop meeting the requirements will have
its name, address and contact information entered in a
searchable database accessible by Honda/Acura owners
and receive a plaque noting its commitment to refinish
excellence. Qualifying PPG-affiliated collision centers
must be sponsored by a Honda/Acura dealer participating in the American Honda Collision Select Program.
Eligible collision centers must adopt the OEConnection
CollisionLink parts ordering software as a prerequisite
to the program. The MVP Business Solutions program
encompasses a range of business development training
and support offerings that focus on improving the quality, speed and cost of running a performance-driven collision repair business. CW
