Sun Chemical introduces reddish blue
pigment for automotive coatings
Sun Chemical has launched Palomar
Alpha Blue 60, a reddish blue high performance effect pigment for coatings that
can maintain its color properties for years
under the impact of sunlight and other
harsh weather conditions, according to
the company. In addition to its strong
weatherfastness capabilities, Sun Chemical Performance Pigments’ Alpha Blue 60
can be used in both water and solvent systems for OEM, refinish automotive and
industrial coatings. Alpha Blue 60 pigments have the added benefits of excellent
viscosity and easy dispersion, and its
unique transparency and travel provide
the visual appearance that is required for
red shade blues used in metallic and effect
automotive coatings.
Dow offers Evoque pre-composite polymer technology
Dow Coating Materials (DCM) has
launched Evoque pre composite polymer
technology designed to change the way
formulators think about hiding and the
use of titanium dioxide (TiO2). Evoque
pre-composite polymer technology improves the particle distribution and light
scattering efficiency of TiO2, facilitating
improvements in hiding efficiency and allowing for up to 20 percent less TiO2 used
in the formulation. Additional benefits include improved barrier properties, such as
stain and corrosion resistance. Depending
on their formulation goals, paint manufacturers can use Evoque pre-composite
polymer technology to reduce TiO2 content or improve hiding while they improve
paint performance. The technology may
also help formulators reduce the carbon
footprint of their end products by reducing the energy footprint that comes from
mining, processing and transporting TiO2
to their formulation plants. DCM is conducting a life cycle analysis, which will be
verified by a third party, to quantify the
full spectrum of sustainability advantages
that may result from using Evoque.
Michelman launches Michem
Emulsion 62330 for exterior
wood applications
Michem Emulsion 62330 from Michelman is a fine particle-sized emulsion
that delivers excellent water repellency
when added to varnishes and other
coatings such as architectural paint,
stains and sealants, without affecting
gloss, according to the company. It is
used to produce reliable water beading
in decks and sealants, and burnish resistance in interior latex paints. Its
small particle size allows it to be used
at low levels in high-gloss systems to
improve water resistance. Highly compatible with a range of polymers,
Michem Emulsion 62330 can improve
anti-blocking and maintains low VOC
levels. The product can be used in a
wide variety of applications, including
exterior wood, wood composite, architectural and decorative coatings and interior furniture and floor coatings.
Evonik offers new Tego
dispersing additives
Evonik has introduced Tego Dispers 653
and Tego Dispers 656 dispersing additives for universal pastes. The products
offer excellent water resistance for indoor and outdoor applications, according to the company. With the new
water-resistant wetting and dispersing
additives, Tego Dispers 653 and Tego
Dispers 656, it is possible to produce
even dark shades with low water absorption. The dispersing additives meet
the EU Eco-label formulating requirements and are, like all wetting and dispersing additives from Evonik, free from
alkylphenol ethoxylates.
Emerald Performance Materials
offers antifoam products for
low-VOC coatings
Emerald Performance Materials Special-
ties Group has launched two new defoamers, Foam Blast 290 and Foam
Blast 331, for use in low-VOC architectural and industrial coatings, adhesives
and other latex polymer applications.
These products are effective, low- or
zero-VOC, alkyl phenol ethoxylate
(APE)-free defoamers that are compatible with a full range of coatings formulations from flat to high gloss, clear and
pigmented systems. Foam Blast 290, an
organically modified low-VOC silicone
defoamer, is effective in combating foam
over time, while retaining gloss and clarity in clear coat systems and paints.
Foam Blast 331, a fortified mineral oil-based zero-VOC product, offers excellent initial and long-term foam control.
Both products are compatible in a wide
range of polymers and coatings and are
effective in both the high sheer grind
and low sheer let down stage.
Wacker Group launches Silres
IC 368
Wacker Group has launched Silres IC
368, a new liquid solventless silicone
resin intermediate for highly weather-able coatings. Silres IC 368 liquid has a
low viscosity and can be processed without organic solvents. When this intermediate is cooked with the same
proportion of alkyd and silicone resins,
the resultant viscosity is one third of the
value obtained with solid silicone resins.
This means that Silres IC 368 is extremely useful for combination resins
that have an extremely high solids content, yet sufficiently low viscosity for
low-solvent, high-solids topcoats, according to the company. The new intermediate is highly versatile and is
suitable for modifying alkyd resins,
hydroxy-functional acryl resins and
hydroxy-functional polyesters that are
commonly used for the industrial coating of wood and metal, including
coil coatings. CW
