manager, silica products. Each
of these PPG businesses provides
products and services to auto-makers and automotive suppliers.
Zoulek reviewed the introduction
of Powercron 9000 electrocoat, PPG’s
first electrocoat formula for the global
automotive parts market that is formulated without a tin catalyst. According to
Zoulek, with the new product, manufacturers will need less paint and less electricity to more uniformly electrocoat parts,
and less wastewater will be generated.
“In addition, PPG’s recent acquisition of Spraylat enables us to offer an
enhanced integrated product solution for
key stages of the wheel-coating process
including primers, basecoats, mica-coats
and clearcoats,” Zoulek said.
Chemark Consulting Group,
Selected to Develop “World
Powder Coatings Study –
2013-2018”
The Powder Coatings Institute (PCI) has
selected Chemark to develop a comprehensive report on the state of the World
Powder Coatings industry using 2013
as the base year and forecasting results
through 2018.
The MIC (Management Information
Committee) was given the responsibility in sourcing this by annual strategic
and tactical planning tool and Chemark
is looking forward to working with the
MIC committee in developing an accurate, meaningful and user-friendly document for the industry it serves.
“Chemark is very honored and
pleased to have been selected to produce
this document,” said Phil Phillips, man-
aging director of Chemark. “We have
gladly accepted this project with the full
understanding of the serious responsibili-
ties that encompass the task. This is to be
a dynamic and useful tool for the paint
and coatings decision-makers to use and
feel confident and is accurate and under-
standable as it applies to their decision
needs.”
The 2013-2018 Analysis will adopt
a thorough research format, insuring a
broad footprint while providing an in-
depth examination, users will find both
strategically and tactically useful. To see

BASF and Nissan Announce
Streamlined Processes
BASF has expanded its partnership
with Nissan, now supplying the au-tomaker with coatings and paints for
the Pathfinder and Infiniti models at its
Smyrna plant in Tennessee.
BASF supplies Nissan with coating
solutions from e-coat and basecoat to
clearcoat. BASF is also working on more
streamlined technologies with Nissan in
emerging markets such as China.
“Nissan is a very important customer
for us and we have been working closely
for a long time,” said Laurent Vaucenat,
global account manager for Nissan at
BASF’s Coatings Division. “BASF’s in-
novative solutions and services, as well
as our leading-edge technologies, have
convinced Nissan to extend their collabo-
ration with us, especially with our 3 Wet
waterborne coating technique.”
The most notable advantage of the 3
Wet waterborne system is the elimina-
tion of one drying phase. Previously, car
bodies required two 30-minute rounds in
the drying oven, after application of the
primer, and the basecoat/clearcoat. In the
new method, these three layers are ap-
plied wet-on-wet, and then subsequently
dried. This shortened process leads to
shorter production time, less energy con-
sumption, streamlined paint lines and –
above all – lower emissions.
BASF is the supplier of “sprayables”
(primer, basecoats and clearcoats) for
Nissan’s European production sites in
Sunderland (England), St. Petersburg
(Russia) and Barcelona (Spain).
“We are where our customers are.
This is why we are increasingly expanding our presence in growing markets
like China, where we currently supply
Nissan’s Huadu plant,” says Vaucenat.
BASF has long-standing supply relationships with Nissan in Japan and India.
In 2012, the close partnership resulted
in an award from Zhengzhou Nissan
Auto Co., Ltd., honoring BASF with the
“Excellent R&D Supplier Award” for the
excellent quality in the supply of environmentally friendly car paint.

oil and gas industry.
It will also establish a new technical
center in Aberdeen to continue to develop
new products for its customers across
Scotland and offshore. Spencer’s main
research and development unit will be
merged with the Stokes Laboratories and
relocated to a new facility at Huthwaite.
Spencer Coatings, which is a member
of U.K. energy sector business development organization, NOF Energy, will also

facility in Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire,
which will become the company’s primary production hub.
As well as supplying the important
oil and gas sector, the new company has
strong positions in other markets. Stokes
Paints is the largest supplier of products
